The Exultet rolls of southern Italy are parchment scrolls containing text and music for the blessing of the great Easter candle; they contain magnificent illustrations, often turned upside down with respect to the text, The Exultet in Southern Italy provides a broad perspective on this phenomenon that has long attracted the interest of those interested in medieval art, liturgy, and music. This book considers these documents in the cultural and liturgical context in which they were made, and provides a perspective on all aspects of this particularly southern Italian practice. While previous studies have concentrated on the illustrations in these rolls, Kelly's book also looks at the particular place of the Exultet in changing ceremonial practices, provides background on the texts and music used in southern Italy, and inquires into the manufacture and purpose of the Exultets--why they were made, who owned them, and how they were used.

This ambitious undertaking is designed to acquaint students, teachers, and researchers with reference sources in any branch of English studies, which Marcuse defines as "all those subjects and lines of critical and scholarly inquiry presently pursued by members of university departments of English language and literature.'' Within each of 24 major sections, Marcuse lists and annotates bibliographies, guides, reviews of research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, and reference histories. The annotations and various indexes are models of clarity and usefulness, and cross references are liberally supplied where appropriate. Although cost-conscious librarians will probably consider the several other excellent literary bibliographies in print, such as James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide (Modern Language Assn. of America, 1989), larger academic libraries will want Marcuse's volume.-- Jack Bales, Mary Washington Coll. Over 2,000 manuscripts accessioned between 1991 and 1995 are described and indexed in this latest volume of the Catalogue of Additions. They range from a 9th-century fragment of St Aldhelm's work to papers of the contemporary author Edward Upward and the economist Sir Roy Harrod. The Trumbull family papers in 380 volumes are the largest of the historical collections catalogued here, whilst modern composers are especially well represented by the comprehensive archives of Cornelius Cardew, Humphrey Searle, Andrzei Panufnik and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Notable single volumes include two Books of Hours of the 14th and 15th centuries and Sir William Dugdale's "Book of Monuments" (1640-1641).

"This volume is published to mark the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's accession. It contains articles which examine a broad range of Tudor manuscripts produced between 1485 and 1603. These include examinations of various forms of regional manuscript production including those written in northern England and in Scotland. Essays consider some of the different kinds of manuscripts written in London during this period, some of them of complex and unusual kinds. Additionally, specific figures or genres are studied of Thomas Wyatt's poetical manuscripts and the circulations of romances."--Jacket.
