Chinese Burn Surgery

In 1958;a severely burned steel worker, the extent of whose bums was 890/0 of the body surface, with 20070 of third degree bums, was saved by the Kwangts'e hospital (now the Rui Jin hospital) of Shanghai Second Medical College. It was the first report in the world of such a critically injured patient recovering, and seemed like a miracle at that time. During the 24 following years, a great number of papers reporting the development and advances in bum therapy in clinics and in research showed that Chinese medical investigations in the field of bums have ranked among the most advanced in the world. Plastic surgery, as an independent branch of general surgery, has been established gradually since Liberation. Recently, new techniques, including microsurgical techniques, in plastic surgery have emerged and developed, permitting rapid progress in clinical work and attracting attention and appreciation in other parts of the world. The first national congress of Burns and Plastic Surgery was held from May 16-24 1982 in Shanghai. Over 800 papers were presented and showed how advances have been made in recent years in these two specialities. Here we present selected articles as a symposium. It is hoped that this symposium will be of value to its readers. About the Editors Chang Ti-sheng (Zhang Di-sheng), who was born 12 June 1916, is Professor of Surgery, Shanghai Second Medical College, Shanghai, Chief of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Director of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai.

This volume represents a comprehensive introduction to current practices in the management of severe burns in the People's Republic of China. Thus although based largely on clinical work and experimental research performed in China, it also takes account of work done elsewhere. The 18 chapters deal with such topics as the history and development of burn surgery in China, the assessment of the severity of burns, first aid, early fluid resuscitation measures, the treatment of inhalation injury, wound management, the surgical treatment of deep burns, wound coverage and epithelial culture, measures to cope with local and systemic infection, immunology, the management of multiple organ failure, metabolism and nutrition, and rehabilitation. The application of techniques from traditional Chinese medicine to the management of burn injuries is also described.

This is a comprehensive book in burn surgery, written by 25 experts in China. It summarizes the theoretical basis of and clinical experience in the prevention and control of burn injuries. It is a comprehensive and up-to-date reference book for surgeons and scientists working with burn management. The different degree of burns and surgical techniques during burn wound care, reconstruction and healing are reviewed separately. Authors also introduce successful cases in different kinds of burns.

This book provides in-depth analysis and guidance in the clinical diagnosis and treatment, and development of new treatments with clinical applied prospect of burn and trauma associated lung injury. It includes study on the pathological change of burn and trauma associated lung injury such as inhalation injury, lung blast injury, pulmonary barotrauma, delayed hemopneumothorax, lung injury associated sepsis, ventilator-induced lung injury and ischemia-reperfusion lung injury. It is also compiled with many clinical typical cases, full data and series of pictures. It also aims at bringing more clinicians’ attention to burn-/trauma-induced lung injury, making them familiar with the relevant theories and clinical diagnose; guiding the treatment of burn and trauma associated lung injury and improving the prognosis and life quality of patients; stimulating more clinicians and researchers to further explore the pathological mechanism and new treatments of burn and trauma associated lung injury. It persists in combining theory and practice, and highlights practical application to reflect the theoretical value. It is very suitable for the medical teaching and can also be used as a reference book for medical doctoral students, postgraduates, and medical trainees receiving continuing education from critical care medicine, burn & trauma surgery, and emergency medicine.

Within recent years, in the course of increasing international exchanges in the field of Health Sciences, many questions on various aspects of its development in China during the past three decades have been asked by visiting colleagues from abroad, particularly on the development and practice of health care in China. It has been felt that since most of the medical publications have been in Chinese, a language inaccessible to the majority of professionals in other countries, a brief review of the clinical and practical aspects of health care in China written in both Chinese and English would be of service in introducing medical practice in China to the medical profession at home and abroad. The present volume is the result of collaborative efforts by specialists in the respective disciplines in clinical medicine of Sichuan Medical College, Chongqing Medical College, Shandong Medical College and Nanjing Medical College. Obviously, such an undertaking entailed the review oflarge quantities of publica tions of China and the contributors are to be congratulated for having successfully completed the selection of appropriate materials included in this space-limited volume.
