Christ And His Righteousness

Ellet Joseph Waggoner (1855 – 1916) was a leading Seventh-day Adventist preacher and writer. In his famous book Christ and His Righteousness, he writes, "Christ has been set forth by God as the One through whom forgiveness of sins is to be obtained; and this forgiveness consists simply in the declaration of His righteousness (which is the righteousness of God) for their remission. God, “who is rich in mercy” (Eph. 2:4), and who delights in it, puts His own righteousness on the sinner who believes in Jesus, as a substitute for his sins. Surely, this is a profitable exchange for the sinner, and it is no loss to God, for He is infinite in holiness, and the supply can never be diminished." Chapters include: 1. Who is Christ? Most Christians know what He was in Biblical history, but many don't know who He is today or His purpose in and for each person's life. The Bible defines Christians as those who live lives patterned after Christ. But what exactly is that life? Righteousness is the gift that God is going to give us so we can be in right standing with Him. The Righteousness of God in Christ concentrates on telling us how we are righteous because of God's righteousness. Having, knowing, and letting God's righteousness operate in our lives is essential to living a better life. The dread we sometimes feel is alleviated as we learn to trust and live right because of His gift of righteousness. Being in right standing with God is more than following a set of rules that we do not look forward to at times because of the consequences. Consequences that sooner or later make us feel like we were missing out on life because of a neglected obligation or dissatisfied results. The righteousness of God in Christ will strengthen us as we learn to accept this gift that releases us to a more fulfilling life. It is the gift that people need and deserve to know about.

E. J. Waggoner and A. T. Jones presented a series of messages exalting justification by faith. The loud cry of the third angel of Revelation 14:9 is the last message according to the book of Revelation. There will be no greater message sent from God than this precious truth-the message of Christ our righteousness. According to Revelation 18:1, this final message will lighten the earth with the glory (character) of God, bringing to a close God's final work upon the earth. This book presents a solid foundation for the various aspects of Christ our righteousness, comparing popular teachings on the subject with the Bible and the writings of Ellen G. White. It points out the importance of incorporating these principles into our own experience. When God's people truly take hold of this most encouraging and hopeful message, it will lead to genuine revival and reformation. Then God will pour out His Spirit and enable us to proclaim the Loud Cry of the Third Angel.

Schreiner not only coherently answers the toughquestions that flow from a discussion about the Old Testament Levitical Law,but also writes clearly and engagingly for the student. The pastor, student,and layperson can easily understand Schreiner’s biblical theology of the Law.
