Marriage has come a long way since biblical times. Women are no longer property, and practices like polygamy have long been rejected. The world is wealthier, healthier, and more able to find and form relationships than ever. So why are Christian congregations doing more burying than marrying today? Explanations for the recession in marriage range from the mathematical--more women in church than men--to the economic, and from the availability of sex to progressive politics. But perhaps marriage hasn't really changed at all. Instead, there is simply less interest in marriage in an era marked by technology, gender equality, and secularization. Mark Regnerus explores how today's Christians find a mate within a faith that esteems marriage but in a world that increasingly yawns at it. This book draws on in-depth interviews with nearly two hundred young-adult Christians from the United States, Mexico, Spain, Poland, Russia, Lebanon, and Nigeria, in order to understand the state of matrimony in global Christian circles today. Regnerus finds that marriage has become less of a foundation for a couple to build upon and more of a capstone. Meeting increasingly high expectations of marriage is difficult, though, in a free market whose logic reaches deep into the home today. The result is endemic uncertainty, slowing relationship maturation, and stalling marriage. But plenty of Christians innovate, resist, and wed, and this book argues that the future of marriage will be a religious one.

"A definite shift in the Catholic Church's understanding of marriage took place at Vatican Council II. Rather than perceiving marriage as a contract whose primary purpose was the procreation of children, the council spoke of marriage as an intimate partnership of life and love. Then, recapturing an earlier tradition, it went on to describe the family as a domestic church." "In this book seven theologians who have lectured and written extensively on marriage probe the rich theology of marriage and family that emerged from Vatican II and explore some of the implications that flow from this theology." "Part One reflects on the sacramentality of marriage and on the family as a church of the home. Part Two examines the pastoral implications this has for marital and family ministry and spirituality."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

The world today is grappling with the consequences of faulty family values practised by past generations. God cherishes the family unit, but modern civilisation, especially in the West, has gradually defiled the institution of marriage and encouraged divorce and single parenting. This has decreased respect in the home and driven God out of classrooms, removing Gods word from school curricula. The shocking result is a moral vacuum and the breakdown of law and order in many ramifications. This unfortunate situation calls for the writing of a book like this to rescue Christian families from a downward slide. J.O.Y Aladetans book, Christian Marriage and Family Life, addresses a relevant problem, gives useful and pragmatic suggestions, and provides delightful scriptural information to help married and unmarried persons alike in their desire for instruction about Christian families. I pray that this book will serve as a tool to protect the institution of marriage and Christian families and that it will promote and enlarge the kingdom of God.
