Cities Vocabularies And The Sustainable Development Of The Silkroads

This book discusses how cities’ identities are formed and developed over time and portrays architecture and the arts as the embodiment of the historical, cultural, and economic characteristics of cities. Furthermore, it explores strategies and solutions to preserve the cultural heritage along the Silk Road, representing a compilation of research addressing the economic and social opportunities and challenges related to the development of a more sustainable and responsible approach to tourism development and the preservation of heritage. As such, it covers a wide range of audiences including economists, architects, planners, tourism experts, and decision-makers interested in making use of cities' available resources and features, offering strategies to explore development opportunities through sustainable and responsible tourism along the Silk Road. This book is a culmination of selected research papers from the first version of the International Conference on "Silk Road Sustainable Tourism Development and Cultural Heritage (SRSTDCH)" which was held in 2021 in collaboration with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the European Interdisciplinary Silk Road Tourism Centre, Greece and the 5th Edition of the International Conference on “Cities’ Identity Through Architecture and Arts (CITAA)” which was held in 2021 in collaboration with University of Pisa, Italy.

This timely book offers a critical account of key governance challenges of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Illustrating China’s efforts to expand its idea of a sustainable eco-civilization, thereby ‘greening’ the BRI, it explores the disputes that have emerged from this process and subsequent complications resulting from geopolitical competition.

The Silk Road of the 21st Century, announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, will certainly change the world. It will definitely stimulate economic growth and prosperity in China, the rest of Asia and elsewhere. But how can we prevent the environmental damage and the increasing inequality on a planetary scale brought about by the construction of this “road” - or in reality: a network of highways, railways, sea routes and other connections? This book deals with the question for the Maritime branch of the new Silk Road and discusses relevant strategies and technologies for sustainable and responsible port innovation and development. The backbone of the study is formed by a number of case studies of port projects in and outside of China. Some chapters focus on best practices, while others discuss new academic viewpoints, but in all cases, suggestions for improvement are given. Based on the idea that a large investment agenda also creates moral responsibility, the Chinese cases also serve to ascertain whether and to what extent they can serve as an example for projects elsewhere. A few introductory and thematic chapters and the conclusion give steering and sense to the rest of the book. Ultimately, this title gives a first and coherent analysis and assessment of a project that is unparalleled in the world and that constitutes an important determining factor for our future.

This book discusses several topics regarding different vocabularies, such as sacred architecture, heritage buildings, open spaces, landmarks, and street escapes, all of which have a direct influence on the city form. The city form is also affected by the indirect impact of the citizens themselves, for example their culture, which in turn depends on the arts, as can be seen and embodied in morals, paintings, media, digital art, and sculpture. The book also examines the fundamental elements that are responsible for the identity of the city. Presenting case studies that demonstrate the how implementing the concept of the responsibility of architecture and arts affects the development of our cities, the book offers a new approach that is based on the available features of a city and explores how planners and decision-makers can use these features to address the myriad problems that our cities are facing.

2015年9月联合国正式通过了《2030年可持续发展议程》及其17个可持续发展目标（以下简称“联合国2030年议程”），从此联合国可持续发展目标与“一带一路”倡议的协同发展一直是沿线各个国家乃至全球关注的重点。兼顾各个国家的不同利益需求和关切点，在政策层面上与可持续发展目标实现对接，避免发展中国家重走以生态环境破坏为代价换取经济增长的老路。近年来城市的可持续发展问题受到越来越多的关注，城市作为“一带一路”建设实施的基本单元，是承载人口和人类活动最主要的空间，推动“一带一路”沿线地区城市的可持续发展在“一带一路”沿线国家和地区繁荣发展过程中发挥着极其重要的作用，对全球实现可持续发展意义重大。本书围绕城市生态环境整治、城市基础设施建设、绿色城市、人文城市、智慧城市、城市建设投融资模式创新六个方面，选取了国内外20多个城市可持续发展的最佳实践案例，总结其发展经验。可以看出，“一带一路”沿线国家在城市建设方面更加可持续，与联合国可持续发展目标更加契合。同时，通过实施“一带一路”倡议将中国改革开放40年城市发展的经验输出，供“一带一路”沿线国家借鉴。最后，从政治、经济、文化角度提出了城市可持续发展未来愿景，从政策沟通、设施联通、贸易畅通、资金融通、民心相通五个方面建议要加强城市间区域合作，促进国内外城市可持续发展，早日实现联合国可持续发展目标。

On 2 June 2022 in Stockholm, an UN-backed coalition of 1,000 stakeholders from over 100 countries launched an Action Plan to steer digitalization towards accelerating environmentally and socially sustainable development. The Coalition for Digital Environmental Sustainability aims to help reorient and prioritize the application of digital technologies to meet the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. Inspired by this Agenda, we have directed our research interest toward the search for approaches to sustainable digital transformation for the environment.
