Excerpt from An Elementary Handbook on Potable Water As an analytical and consulting chemist, the author of this handbook is frequently called upon to give information on the subject of water in its relations to disease. Two bulletins from his pen on this subject have already been issued by the Iowa State Board of Health, for the benefit of the public; and from the favor with which they have been received, he has been induced to prepare the present treatise, designed especially for the use of physicians, sanitarians, and chemists. It is hoped that the subject is presented in a sufficiently interesting manner to be worthy of their study, and that the facts are expressed in scientific language capable of being easily understood by every intelligent person. The impurities in drinking-water that arc oftenest the cause of disease and death are discussed here. The natural and artificial processes of removing them from water are also given due consideration. But all methods of analysis are avoided, except some of the elementary qualitative tests given in the appendix. Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants. Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Excerpt from Water-Analysis: A Practical Treatise on the Examination of Potable Water The first edition of this book was published in the spring of the year 1868. The second edition was a reprint with some additional matter contributed by Chapman. The third' edition, brought out soon after the death of Chapman, was in many respects a new book. It appeared in the spring of 1874, and has been reproduced in successive editions ever since. With the tenth edition, which is now called for, the time has arrived for revising and recasting the book so as to embody the results of a very ripe experience. In 1868, as Chapman and myself wrote in our preface, this was the first book which had been published on Water Analyst's; and our task was rendered possible by the then recent discovery of that wonderful reaction whereby albumen and albuminoid substances were made to evolve ammonia in a powerfully oxidising solution. The ammonia so generated we named Albuminoid Ammonia, and the quantity of that ammonia is the measure of the potential albumen in drinking-water. On this basis we have built up water-analysis for general sanitary purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Drinking-Water and Ice Supplies: And Their Relations to Health and Disease Purpose of informing the householder how wholesome water may be obtained both in town and country. This end is sought not by laying down a series of axioms and rules, but rather by calling the reader's attention to some more or less interesting facts about water and water supplies, in the hope of helping him on these to base an independent judgment applicable to his own particular case. Some of the new bacterial lore is brought into prominence, be cause a good deal of the current distrust of good water sources arises from false notions as to the relationships of the water-bacteria to disease. On the other hand, it is believed that much serious illness may be spared by a knowledge of such facts as are here laid down about the real dangers which lurk in water made impure by inattention to simple sanitary laws.
