CIM (computer integrated manufacturing) is an acronym that has become fairly well known in recent years in manufacturing and related engineering circles. The purpose of the CIM Project at IIASA is to close the widening gap between the pace of technological, economic, and social events, on the one hand, and the progress of understanding those events, on the other.

Advanced manufacturing systems are vital to the manufacturing industry. It is well known that if a target work piece has a curved surface, then automation of the polishing process is difficult. Controller design for industrial robots and machine tools presents results where industrial robots have been successfully applied to such surfaces, presenting up to date information on these advanced manufacturing systems, including key technologies. Chapters cover topics such as velocity-based discrete-time control system for industrial robots; preliminary simulation of intelligent force control; CAM system for an articulated industrial robot; a robot sander for artistic furniture; a machining system for wooden paint rollers; a polishing robot for PET bottle blow moulds; and a desktop orthogonal-type robot for finishing process of LED lens cavity; and concludes with a summary. The book is aimed at professionals with experience in industrial manufacturing, and engineering students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Presents results where industrial robots have been used successfully to polish difficult surfaces Presents the latest technology in the field Includes key technology such as customized several position and force controllers

Design and manufacturing is the essential element in any product development lifecycle. Industry vendors and users have been seeking a common language to be used for the entire product development lifecycle that can describe design, manufacturing and other data pertaining to the product. Many solutions were proposed, the most successful being the Stadndard for Exchange of Product model (STEP). STEP provides a mechanism that is capable of describing product data, independent from any particular system. The nature of this description makes it suitable not only for neutral file exchange, but also as a basis for implementing, sharing and archiving product databases. ISO 10303-AP203 is the first and perhaps the most successful AP developed to exchange design data between different CAD systems. Going from geometric data (as in AP203) to features (as in AP224) represents an important step towards having the right type of data in a STEP-based CAD/CAM system. Of particular significance is the publication of STEP-NC, as an extension of STEP to NC, utilising feature-based concepts for CNC machining purposes. The aim of this book is to provide a snapshot of the recent research outcomes and implementation cases in the field of design and manufacturing where STEP is used as the primary data representation protocol. The 20 chapters are contributed by authors from most of the top research teams in the world. These research teams are based in national research institutes, industries as well as universities.

The text is organized into four sections. Section One is introductory: Chapter 1 provides some background on manu-facturing and defines programmable automation. Chapter 2 explains calculation methods used to justify automation expenditures, as motivated by productivity concepts. Section Two covers computer numerical control: Chapter Chapter 3 introduces CNC technology, Chapter 4 discusses CNC programming, and Chapter 5 addresses CNC simulation. Robotics is covered in Section Three: Chapter 6 introduces robotics technology and Chapter 7 goes over both robotics programming and simulation. Section Four addresses PLCs: Chapter 8 introduces PLCs and Chapter 9 covers programming and simulation of PLCs. Finally, Chapter 10 concludes the text with a discussion of how all three technologies are brought together to create programmable automated workstations and work cells. --Book Jacket.
