Firearms are machines, and like all machines they sometimes break. Regardless of its quality, there will be wear when the firearm is subjected to hard use. Serious shooters must learn to maintain, repair, and in some cases modify their firearms to keep them operational. Most shooters are fair part-replacers, but custom gunsmithing is another matter. We have to know know limitations, but there are times when all of us have do the repairs ourselves. Think of commando gunsmithing as isolating the problem with a firearm and curing it or, at least, applying a temporary expedient. We gun owners should be able to handle what we can and save the professional gunsmith for more complicated work. Commando Gunsmithing will teach you what to look for, as well as what to do and under what circumstances. It includes simple instructions for the most common handgun, rifle, and shotgun malfunctions, including ammo-related problems, springs, magazines, grips, sights, and bolts. It also includes a primer on proper cleaning and regular maintenance procedures, a list of spare parts and tools to keep in your ready bag, and resources to find the most reliable and affordable parts. Finding the problem and fixing it usually is neither art nor science, but rather hard work. With proper tools, education, and attitude, the commando gunsmith will always be well armed with a firearm he can count on.

The Air Commando secret wars happened mostly during the Vietnam War time frame and was a global effort involving USAF volunteer personnel who were given official military orders that did not necessarily specify the country they served in, and civilian clothes were many times authorized. Later they had great difficulty proving that they served in many of these countries, which affected their future VA care. These operations were used to strengthen normally a poor country with little military resources and training with secret warriors frequently being there doing some of their legwork behind the scenes. All the operations were tight-lipped, frequently forbidden to tell families where you were and what you were doing. As an example; Capt. Bob Simpsons death, the first fighter pilot KIA in Vietnam in August 1962, became a total fabrication of where, why, and how and took a number of years before the government came clean because of my efforts. Secret wars have a long history, and they will continue because of the interest of more-powerful nations with their less fortunate brethren.

There may come a time when government restrictions severely limit not only access to firearms but the tools and means to repair and maintain them, or you may someday find yourself in the boondocks with a busted weapon. That's where the guerrilla gunsmith comes in. Ragnar Benson has had experience fixing "junk" guns in some tough places around the world, and here he shares some innovative ways to patch up, cobble together and otherwise make operational everything from antique rifles still found in remote war zones to modern firearms suffering from appalling abuse. Drawing on lessons and stories from backwoods experts he's worked with under desperate conditions in Africa, the Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan and beyond, Ragnar tells how to employ last-resort but effective techniques to remove hopelessly stuck rounds and other barrel obstructions, straighten bent barrels, replace lost parts, smooth out dented magazines, make repairs to some pretty hopeless stocks, scrounge up workable ammo and more. These are last-ditch, do-it-yourself methods, but they may be all you'll have to fall back on deep in the bush or with your back to the wall, when the only things between you and the enemy are a rifle and the know-how to make it work.
