Excerpt from Commercial English for Secondary Schools Correspondence with representative business firms made it clear to the author that what business men are expecting of the high school graduates who enter their offices is a thorough and usable knowledge of good English. This is to be regarded as far more important than mere matters of form, for it is often necessary for beginners to learn new forms to meet the preference of a particular firm. Excerpt from English in Business: For Students in Commercial and General Secondary Schools This book is for boys and girls who are going out into active life rather than for those who go on to college. It will meet the needs of those commercial high schools that train ex elusively for a business career. It will also meet the needs of the general high schools with commercial departments or elective courses in business, for it contains the fundamentals of good writing for any purpose whatever. It should prove useful in all those continuation and corporation schools that give training to boys and girls who have gone to work before securing a high school diploma. 'in short, it is designed to meet the needs of all secondary schools that pursue the larger aims of business education. Business men are no longer content with boys and girls who have been prepared merely as stenographers and bookkeepers. Commercial courses, to be sure, endeavor to train young people to do one thing, or a few related things, with skill and accuracy. But they also endeavor to furnish wide knowledge of the whole business field, so that the pupil may pass easily from his first position into those business activities which his or her peculiar abilities will make most congenial. Excerpt from Commercial Education in Public Secondary Schools This book deals with some important contemporary problems of commercial education in secondary schools, considered from the point of View of the investi gator, teacher, and administrative officer, and aims at con structive proposais based on the actual needs of business as it is. These constructive proposals are the outcome of a critical examination of contemporary commercial education in secondary schools, together with certain investigations in the field of business in several cities in the United States, and of earlier studies by the author of commercial education in Europe. The volume also contains, in Chapter VI, Mr. Thompson's report on commercial education in the high schools of the city of New York, constituting a part of my report submitted to the Committee on School Inquiry of the Board of Estimate and Apportionment in 1912. Although, as Mr. Thompson says in his Preface, there is considerable literature on commercial education, it is also true that there is much uncertainty and not a little actual misconception concerning the aims, scope, and methods of education for commercial life in the minds of business men and teachers alike - confusion and misconceptions that in terfere with the formulation of just aims, and prevent profitable endeavor in preparing our young people for busi ness careers. Excerpt from Commercial Education in Secondary Schools At the present time, public secondary commercial education, in response to public desire, is rapidly adjusting its work to meet the changing needs of our social and economic Systems. As a result, the public secondary schools are setting Standards that are to dominate secondary commercial instruction. Recognition of the fact that commercial education has a definite place in the public vocational program has resulted in many questions concerning the definition of the field for which commercial education should train, concerning the efficiency of current facilities for commercial education, and concerning the range, methods of organization and presentation of commercial work offered. It is the purpose of this book to analyze such questions as the foregoing, to define commercial education, and to establish fundamental principles by which further progress should be guided. I am greatly indebted to the late Frank V. Thompson (Superintendent of Schools, Boston) for his inspiration and help in the preparation of certain parts of the work, I want to thank Dean Henry W. Holmes, Professor David Sneddcn, and Mr. Vierling Kersey for their criticisms. Mr. F. G. Nichols, State Supervisor of Commercial Education, Pennsylvania, has not only been quoted freely but has given helpful suggestions. My greatest indebtedness is to my wife who has aided in many ways in the preparation of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Business English This work grew out of teaching English to college men who were beginning their studies in Engineering. It seemed for various reasons desirable to give such students - along with their work in pure literature and technical English - some in struction in English as adapted to buying and selling, advertis ing and correspondence. There seemed however to be no text-book quite available for such a purpose. A purely elementary text-book, ignoring all high-school English and some of the grammar-school instruo tion, would not do. Nor could the need be supplied by some more advanced book devoted to the principles of correspond ence. What was needed was a book which took into considera tion the best standards and scholarship of college teaching, and applied the established principles of composition to the special problems of business, with due reference to the vocabularies of commerce and commercial law. From this point of view, then, the text of the book was writ ten. When finished, much of it was seen to be Within the grasp of younger students. It was then determined to simplify the text a little further, and to construct exercises which would make the book serviceable in the third and fourth year of tech nical and commercial high schools, in the first year of technical colleges, in business colleges, and in correspondence work. The manner in which this adjustment has been made may be seen at a glance in the exercises under Argument (p.
