These constructive proposals are the outcome of a critical examination of contemporary commercial education in secondary schools, together with certain investigations in the field of business in several cities in the United States, and of earlier studies by the author of commercial education in Europe. The volume also contains, in Chapter VI, Mr. Thompson's report on commercial education in the high schools of the city of New York, constituting a part of my report submitted to the Committee on School Inquiry of the Board of Estimate and Apportionment in 1912. As a result, the public secondary schools are setting Standards that are to dominate secondary commercial instruction. Recognition of the fact that commercial education has a definite place in the public vocational program has resulted in many questions concerning the definition of the field for which commercial education should train, concerning the efficiency of current facilities for commercial education, and concerning the range, methods of organization and presentation of commercial work offered. It is the purpose of this book to analyze such questions as the foregoing, to define commercial education, and to establish fundamental principles by which further progress should be guided. Excerpt from Business English This work grew out of teaching English to college men who were beginning their studies in Engineering. It seemed for various reasons desirable to give such students - along with their work in pure literature and technical English - some in struction in English as adapted to buying and selling, advertis ing and correspondence. There seemed however to be no text-book quite available for such a purpose. A purely elementary text-book, ignoring all high-school English and some of the grammar-school instruo tion, would not do. Nor could the need be supplied by some more advanced book devoted to the principles of correspond ence. What was needed was a book which took into considera tion the best standards and scholarship of college teaching, and applied the established principles of composition to the special problems of business, with due reference to the vocabularies of commerce and commercial law. From this point of view, then, the text of the book was writ ten. When finished, much of it was seen to be Within the grasp of younger students. It was then determined to simplify the text a little further, and to construct exercises which would make the book serviceable in the third and fourth year of tech nical and commercial high schools, in the first year of technical colleges, in business colleges, and in correspondence work.
