Comparative Evaluation Of Focused Retrieval

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 9th International Workshop of the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval, INEX 2009, held in Vught, The Netherlands, in December 2009. The aim of the INEX 2010 workshop was to bring together researchers in the field of XML IR who participated in the INEX 2010 campaign. During the past year, participating organizations contributed to the building of large-scale XML test collections by creating topics, performing retrieval runs and providing relevance assessments. The workshop concluded the results of this large-scale effort, summarized and addressed issues encountered, and devised a work plan for the future evaluation of XML retrieval systems. The 37 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 42 submissions; they are organized into sections corresponding to the nine tracks of the workshop, investigating various aspects of XML retrieval, from book search to entity.

This volume is based on the research papers presented in the 5th Computer Science On-line Conference. The 61 revised papers presented together with an introduction were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on mainly cross-language experiments, mono lingual experiments, domain-specific document retrieval, interactive cross-language retrieval, cross-language question answering, cross-language image retrieval, and cross-language spoken document retrieval.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 14th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries, ECDL 2010, held in Glasgow, UK, in September 2010. The 22 long papers, 14 short papers, 19 posters and 9 demos presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 102 full paper submissions, 40 poster submissions, and 13 demo submissions. In addition the book contains the abstract of a keynote speech and an appendix stating information on the doctoral consortium, the workshops, and tutorials, as well as the panel, which were held at the conference. Documents usually have a content and a structure. The content refers to the text of the document, whereas the structure refers to how a document is logically organized. An increasingly common way to encode the structure is through the use of a mark-up language. Nowadays, the most widely used mark-up language for representing structure is the eXtensible Mark-up Language (XML). XML can be used to provide a focused access to documents, i.e. returning XML elements, such as sections and paragraphs, instead of whole documents in response to a query. Such focused strategies are of particular benefit for information repositories containing long documents, or documents covering a wide variety of topics, where users are directed to the most relevant content within a document. The increased adoption of XML to represent a document structure requires the development of tools to effectively access documents marked-up in XML. This book provides a detailed description of query languages, indexing strategies, ranking algorithms, presentation scenarios developed to access XML documents. Major advances in XML retrieval were seen from 2002 as a result of INEX, the Initiative for Evaluation of XML Retrieval. INEX, also described in this book, provided test sets for evaluating XML retrieval effectiveness. Many of the developments and results described in this book were investigated within INEX.
