This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1882 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VII. RELIGION UNDER THE NEW KINGDOM. Long centuries of oppression separate the Middle Kingdom from the New. Between them comes the rule of the so-called Hyksos, or Shepherd Kings. The period of their supremacyis one of the most obscure in Egyptian history. The only thing told by later historians is, that in the reign of a certain otherwise unknown king, Timaos or Amuntimaos, an eastern people, of what race cannot easily be determined,1 made an inroad on Egypt, became masters of the lower portion of the country, and made the whole kingdom tributary to them. The barbarians ravaged and destroyed everything, monuments, temples, towns, but in the end they adopted the Egyptian civilisation, and replaced in new-built temples the monuments of the ancient kings, which at first they had destroyed. They now, however, 1 Josephus calls them Phoenicians the words so much. Only Bnon or or Arabians. The known proper names that their names are not Syro-Ara- of the Cheta or Hethites are totally maic (i.e., Semitic). On this point different.
