Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints "believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly." The Prophet Joseph Smith said that he "believe[d] the Bible as it read when it came from the pen of the original writers. Ignorant translators, careless transcribers, or designing and corrupt priests have committed many errors." The Prophet also observed that "it was apparent that many important points touching the salvation of men, had been taken from the Bible, or lost before it was compiled." From the early days of the restoration of the gospel, the Lord told Joseph Smith that a translation of the Bible was necessary to restore these doctrines. The Prophet began his inspired revision of the Bible in June 1830 and finished it in July 1833.Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke of the effect that the Prophet Joseph had on the Bible when he said: "[The Prophet] revised and added to the King James Version of the Bible by the spirit of inspiration, doing more to perfect that volume of holy writ and to return it to its state of pristine perfection than any single person has ever done." This Study Version is not meant to replace the official King James Version of the Bible published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book is meant to be a study tool to help you engage in a more meaningful and comprehensive study of Jesus Christ and His words. It contains the entire text of the Old Testament from Genesis through Deuteronomy and Isaiah and shows the Prophet's inspired revisions in bold type. As you read these inspired revisions seamlessly verse by verse and chapter by chapter you will begin to discover the "pristine perfection"of the Old Testament as restored through Joseph Smith, the Prophet.
