As the construction industry continues to develop within the natural environment, the industry has to take strong measures to ensure that its activities are in harmony with the environment. The challenge for the construction sector is not just to respond to the need for adequate housing and rapid urbanisation, but to do it in a way that is socially and ecologically responsible. This book begins with the current progress of the construction industry in Malaysia before shifting to the fragile relationship between construction and environment. Knowing the rapid development in Malaysia and how construction can affect the environment, this book delves into some evidence of environmental degradation in Malaysia. In view of the current global scenario, which highlighted the importance of sustainable development and sustaining natural resources, the theme selected for the 2nd Regional ECOMOD 2007 Conference was indeed appropriate. This conference has generated overwhelming interest and I am sure the participants have focussed diligently on the serious issues concerning important environmental issues and steps needed to be taken towards a sustainable development and management of our natural resources and environment. As governments in the Asian region introduce new initiatives and development policies to rejuvenate and protect their environment and natural resources, it is imperative that universities and research institutions play a fundamental role in ensuring that the objectives of these policies are realized. Such institutions can complement government proposals by embarking on research that is relevant and valuable to the needs of respective nations and pursuing extensive research so that the outcome and technology generated can be transferred effectively to the end users. This book presents local knowledge about issues on life, science and technology. It presents the related science and technology knowledge, new applications or developments that have taken place based on local knowledge. It consists of papers that illustrate the contribution of local knowledge to scientific investigation, unearth unknown or little known significance of local plant and animal resources, as well as their management and conservation. The relationship between doctors and the pharmaceutical industry has received significant attention from both the policy makers and consumers groups over the last few years. lt had been reported in many international literatures that physicians meet with pharmaceutical representatives several times in a month and accept many gifts, cash payments, drug samples, meals, as well as travelling expenses to attend educational and recreational events. Within this context, a study was carried out to identify and to document various promotional techniques used by pharmaceutical industry directed towards general practitioners practicing in Malaysia.This study was a cross-sectional study, involving registered GPs practicing in Malaysia.

As part of the health policy of a country, national medicine policy should be an essential section which aimed at rational use of pharmaceuticals. World Health Organization supports country to develop, implement and monitor the effectiveness of national medicines policy’s guidelines, strategies and plans. A good and effective national medicine policy will ensure the availability, affordability, accessibility and rational usability of essential medicine, and traditional, complementary and alternative medicine. National medicine policy will make sure that medicines in the country are not only safe, effective and of good quality, but they must also be cost effective. When this book was written, Malaysia still has not had any comprehensive document on the national medicine policy. A study was conducted to evaluate the status of the pharmaceutical sector in relation to the national medicine policy components. This book provides information about the status of medicine policy in the country and to what extent the medicine policy makers recognize and are aware of the existence of medicine policy in the country. How can we expect for effective and reliable policies, if policy makers do not know or are not sure about the national medicine policy and the various medicine policies available in the country!
