`A book which will be of great interest and use to teachers and school staff... case examples and details of interventions are very helpful... [a book for] teachers to dip into when faced with a pupil troubled by fears and phobias, or an issue such as bullying′ - Young Minds Magazine `This book successfully integrates current theory, practice and research. It is concise and easy to read.... I broadened and deepened my understanding from reading it. I can imagine some EPs and others using individual chapters as informative, quick revisions of key subject areas.... Additionally, this book will be useful to the growing army of other adults now working with children and young people′ - British Psychological Society Division of Educational and Child Psychology Newsletter Increasingly, the carers of children must call on basic counselling skills in their interactions with young people and their families. This book addresses the key issues and problems faced by adults involved in the care of children, and gives them the knowledge they need to provide effective support for the children and young people with whom they work. Integrating theory, practice and research, the authors give clear, accessible interventions designed to alleviate distress. They demonstrate how appropriate counselling approaches and support systems can be incorporated by practitioners into their existing repertoire of skills.

Written by two practising clinicians, this book is designed as a guide for those who work with children. In clear, simple language it focuses upon some of the most common, yet often incapacitating difficulties which are frequently encountered by young children and adolescents. After introducing and discussing different forms of therapy and treatment used in clinical work with children, the book provides a series of chapters, each dealing with a specific difficulty. Drawing upon recent research findings, and employing detailed case illustrations, it seeks to help the reader to understand the nature of each problem and offers a guide as to how the child in difficulty can best be helped. The book is designed to be of particular value to those working in education, social work, health and child-care settings, and anyone who needs to be able to recognize and help children in difficulty.

Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Children experience loss in many ways: in the loss of a parent through death or divorce, through illness or disability, in failure and bullying, and in the host of hurts that are inherent in being alive. Helping Children to Manage Loss: Positive Strategies for Renewal and Growth explores the territory of loss in childhood using the words of children who have found themselves bereft of hope. As well as covering the short and long term implications that arise when loss occurs, it provides positive approaches that enable children not only to cope but to grow through their experiences. Incorporating practical techniques, case studies, successful models of intervention and insights from the author's experience as a counsellor who has worked extensively with children, the book explores such topics as: * helping a child prepare for loss * the initial impact of bereavement and its immediate consequences * helping a child mourn/come to terms with loss * separation and divorce, and the `sleeper' effects that cause long-term damage * dreams as communication and how they can be used therapeutically * enabling strategies to use with children facing illness, including cancer and disability * facing the trauma of abuse, suicide and disaster * strategies for renewal at home and at school, including the importance of active listening and ritual. The book also includes a section on further sources of support, with useful addresses, resources, books and telephone contact numbers.

Supporting children and families through separation and divorce is a major area of concern in contemporary society. However, it is sometimes hard for those professionals who are helping supporting families to hear the `voice' of the child in this process. Writing from their wide experience as clinicians working with children and families, Emilia Dowling and Gill Gorell Barnes set out in this book to address this gap, and allow the child to be heard. Working with Children and Parents through Separation and Divorce combines research with clinical and practical approaches to working with families going through stress changes linked to separation or divorce. Attention is given to the wider context of children's lives with the implications for general practice, schools and other services addressed in special chapters. A focused approach to divorce related problems that takes each family member's view into account is illustrated. Combining individual and family work helps parents to resolve difficulties, enabling children troubled by parental separation to progress with their own lives. This book is essential reading for `front line' professionals as well as specialists who encounter children and families going through this life transition in the course of their work.
