From a symposium held in Cordoba in 2005, yet largely enriched with new developments, recent research and innovative communications, this collection explores the modes of transmission of technical knowledge in antiquity and the Middle Ages.

This Handbook is intended to show the links between the philosophy written in the Middle Ages and that being done today. Essays by over twenty medieval specialists, who are also familiar with contemporary discussions, explore areas in logic and philosophy of language, metaphysics, epistemology, moral psychology ethics, aesthetics, political philosophy and philosophy of religion. Each topic has been chosen because it is of present philosophical interest, but a more or less similar set of questions was also discussed in the Middle Ages. No party-line has been set about the extent of the similarity. Some writers (e.g. Panaccio on Universals; Cesalli on States of Affairs) argue that there are the closest continuities. Others (e.g. Thom on Logical Form; Pink on Freedom of the Will) stress the differences. All, however, share the aim of providing new analyses of medieval texts and of writing in a manner that is clear and comprehensible to philosophers who are not medieval specialists. The Handbook begins with eleven chapters looking at the history of medieval philosophy period by period, and region by region. They constitute the fullest, most wide-ranging and up-to-date chronological survey of medieval philosophy available. All four traditions - Greek, Latin, Islamic and Jewish (in Arabic, and in Hebrew) - are considered, and the Latin tradition is traced from late antiquity through to the seventeenth century and beyond.

How and why early modern European artisans began to record their knowledge. In From Lived Experience to the Written Word, Pamela H. Smith considers how and why, beginning in 1400 CE, European craftspeople began to write down their making practices. Rather than simply passing along knowledge in the workshop, these literate artisans chose to publish handbooks, guides, treatises, tip sheets, graphs, and recipe books, sparking early technical writing and laying the groundwork for how we think about scientific knowledge today. Focusing on metalworking from 1400–1800 CE, Smith looks at the nature of craft knowledge and skill, studying present-day and historical practices, objects, recipes, and artisanal manuals. From these sources, she considers how we can reconstruct centuries of largely lost knowledge. In doing so, she aims not only to unearth the techniques, material processes, and embodied experience of the past but also to gain insight into the lifeworld of artisans and their understandings of matter.

Acta Periodica Duellatorum (APD) is an independent, international, and peer-reviewed journal dedicated to Historical European Martial Arts studies. This emerging field of research has strong interdisciplinary dimensions with notably History, Anthropology, Historical sciences, Art History, History of Science and Technology, Archaeology, Sport Sciences, etc. APD was founded in 2013 and publishes two issues per year from 2016 on.

The rise of agrarian capitalism in Britain is usually told as a story about markets, land and wages. The Enclosure of Knowledge reveals that it was also about books, knowledge and expertise. It argues that during the early modern period, farming books were a key tool in the appropriation of the traditional art of husbandry possessed by farm workers of all kinds. It challenges the dominant narrative of an agricultural 'enlightenment', in which books merely spread useful knowledge, by showing how codified knowledge was used to assert greater managerial control over land and labour. The proliferation of printed books helped divide mental and manual labour to facilitate emerging social divisions between labourers, managers and landowners. The cumulative effect was the slow enclosure of customary knowledge. By synthesising diverse theoretical insights, this study opens up a new social history of agricultural knowledge and reinvigorates long-term histories of knowledge under capitalism.

This book focusses on a historical and cultural aspect of medieval Islam: the market inspection (hisba) in the Muslim state and its impact on the development of arts and crafts. It is a pioneer work in Islamic studies in which this aspect is being studied from over-all historical and cultural points of view. The study deals with two main issues: the history of market inspection in medieval Islam where it tries to highlight some additional notes concerning the origin of the institution of market inspection in Islam and also emphasizes its cultural role in the Muslim society. The second issue focuses on the impact of the institution of market inspection on the development of the visual arts and crafts in medieval Islam. Methodologically, the study surveys the references to the crafts in the manuals of hisba and compares them with the information about these crafts as they run in reality.
