A large international conference on High Performance Computing and its - plications was held in Shanghai, China, August 8–10, 2004. It served as a forum to present current work by researchers and software developers from around the world as well as to highlight activities in the high performance computing area. It aimed to bring together research scientists, application - oneers,andsoftwaredeveloperstodiscussproblemsandsolutionsandtoid- tify new issues in this area. The conference focused on the design and analysis of high performance computing algorithms, tools, and platforms and their s- enti?c, engineering, medical, and industrial applications. It drew about 150 participants from Canada, China, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Mexico, S- gapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. More than 170 papers were received on a variety of subjects in modern high performance computing and its applications, such as numerical and software algorithm design and analysis, grid computing advance, adaptive and par- lel algorithm development, distributing debugging tools, computational grid and network environment design, computer simulation and visualization, and computational language study and their applications to science, engineering, and medicine. This book contains ninety papers that are representative in these subjects. It serves as an excellent research reference for graduate s- dents, scientists, and engineers who work with high performance computing for problems arising in science, engineering, and medicine. This conference would not have been possible without the support of a number of organizations and agencies and the assistance of many people.

The realization that the use of components off the shelf (COTS) could reduce costs sparked the evolution of the massive parallel computing systems available today. The main problem with such systems is the development of suitable operating systems, algorithms and application software that can utilise the potential processing power of large numbers of processors. As a result, systems comprising millions of processors are still limited in the applications they can efficiently solve. Two alternative paradigms that may offer a solution to this problem are Quantum Computers (QC) and Brain Inspired Computers (BIC). This book presents papers from the 14th edition of the biennial international conference on High Performance Computing - From Clouds and Big Data to Exascale and Beyond, held in Cetraro, Italy, from 2 - 6 July 2018. It is divided into 4 sections covering data science, quantum computing, high-performance computing, and applications. The papers presented during the workshop covered a wide spectrum of topics on new developments in the rapidly evolving supercomputing field – including QC and BIC – and a selection of contributions presented at the workshop are included in this volume. In addition, two papers presented at a workshop on Brain Inspired Computing in 2017 and an overview of work related to data science executed by a number of universities in the USA, parts of which were presented at the 2018 and previous workshops, are also included. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves high-performance computing.

High Performance Computing (HPC) is the area of supercomputers, the fastest and best systems of their time. Most supercomputers are used to solve scientific problems, be it weather forecasting or simulation of car crashes. This book deals with systems that are in practical use for such application areas. It details the history of supercomputers and highlights the properties and trends that will remain in the future. Coverage also describes all aspects of High Performance Computing, explores the practice of HPC planning, and offers a look at current trends and visions, like Grid Computing.

Most of the papers in this volume were presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop High Performance Computing: Technology and Application, held in Cetraro, Italy from 24 to 26 of June, 1996. The main purpose of the Workshop was to discuss some key scientific and technological developments in high performance computing, identify significant trends and defme desirable research objectives. The volume structure corresponds, in general, to the outline of the workshop technical agenda: general concepts and emerging systems, software technology, algorithms and applications. One of the Workshop innovations was an effort to extend slightly the scope of the meeting from scientific/engineering computing to enterprise-wide computing. The papers on performance and scalability of database servers, and Oracle DBMS reflect this attempt We hope that after reading this collection of papers the readers will have a good idea about some important research and technological issues in high performance computing. We wish to give our thanks to the NATO Scientific and Environmental Affairs Division for being the principal sponsor for the Workshop. Also we are pleased to acknowledge other institutions and companies that supported the Workshop: European Union: European Commission DGIII-Industry, CNR: National Research Council of Italy, University of Calabria, Alenia Spazio, Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali, ENEA: Italian National Agency for New Technology, Energy and the Environment, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard-Convex, Hitachi, NEC, Oracle, and Silicon Graphics-Cray Research. High-performance computing (HPC) describes the use of connected computing units to perform complex tasks. It relies on parallelization techniques and algorithms to synchronize these disparate units in order to perform faster than a single processor could, alone. Used in industries from medicine and research to military and higher education, this method of computing allows for users to complete complex data-intensive tasks. This field has undergone many changes over the past decade, and will continue to grow in popularity in the coming years. Innovative Research Applications in Next-Generation High Performance Computing aims to address the future challenges, advances, and applications of HPC and related technologies. As the need for such processors increases, so does the importance of developing new ways to optimize the performance of these supercomputers. This timely publication provides comprehensive information for researchers, students in ICT, program developers, military and government organizations, and business professionals.

The year 2019 marked four decades of cluster computing, a history that began in 1979 when the first cluster systems using Components Off The Shelf (COTS) became operational. This achievement resulted in a rapidly growing interest in affordable parallel computing for solving compute intensive and large scale problems. It also directly lead to the founding of the Parco conference series. Starting in 1983, the International Conference on Parallel Computing, ParCo, has long been a leading venue for discussions of important developments, applications, and future trends in cluster computing, parallel computing, and high-performance computing. ParCo2019, held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 10 – 13 September 2019, was no exception. Its papers, invited talks, and specialized mini-symposia addressed cutting-edge topics in computer architectures, programming methods for specialized devices such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and graphical processing units (GPUs), innovative applications of parallel computers, approaches to reproducibility in parallel computations, and other relevant areas. This book presents the proceedings of ParCo2019, with the goal of making the many fascinating topics discussed at the meeting accessible to a broader audience. The proceedings contains 57 contributions in total, all of which have been peer-reviewed after their presentation. These papers give a wide ranging overview of the current status of research, developments, and applications in parallel computing.

Current advances in High Performance Computing (HPC) increasingly impact efficient software development workflows. Programmers for HPC applications need to consider trends such as increased core counts, multiple levels of parallelism, reduced memory per core, and I/O system challenges in order to derive well performing and highly scalable codes. At the same time, the increasing complexity adds further sources of program defects. While novel programming paradigms and advanced system libraries provide solutions for some of these challenges, appropriate supporting tools are indispensable. Such tools aid application developers in debugging, performance analysis, or code optimization and therefore make a major contribution to the development of robust and efficient parallel software. This book introduces a selection of the tools presented and discussed at the 7th International Parallel Tools Workshop, held in Dresden, Germany, September 3-4, 2013.
