Danish Architecture Since 1754

This is the story of the development in Danish architecture from 1754 until today. This book describes the development from Amalienborg ́s beautiful palaces to the Tietgen Dormitory ́s wonderful circular building in Ørestaden. In 1754, Akademiet for de Skjønne Kunster (The Royal Academy of Fine Arts), was founded for the study of art and architecture. In its own way, Denmark has managed to make original contributions to European architecture, ranging from Eigtved ́s Amalienborg Palace, C.F.Hansen's play with Roman classicism, M.G.Bindesbøll's Thorvaldsens Museum to Utzon's organic structuralism and Tegnestuen Vandkunsten's renewal of housing forms. All these architects were inspired by foreign ideas and foreign architects and all have led a critical dialogue with their own tradition; Henning Larsen, Friis & Moltke, Fogh & Følner, 3xNielsen, KHR, Dorte Mandrup, Lundgaard & Tranberg, B.I.G. More and more foreign architects are now working in Denmark: Zaha Hadid, Tony Fretton, Norman Foster, their works are also represented in this book. This concise and carefully organized history of architecture will be enjoyed by both professors, students as well as laymen with an interest in architecture.

What does it mean to live a good life in a time when the planet is overheating, the human population continues to steadily reach new peaks, oceans are turning more acidic, and fertile soils the world over are eroding at unprecedented rates? These and other simultaneous harms and threats demand creative responses at several levels of consideration and action. Written by an international team of contributors, this book examines in-depth the relationship between sustainability and the good life. Drawing on wealth of theories, from social practice theory to architecture and design theory, and disciplines, such as anthropology and environmental philosophy, this volume promotes participatory action-research based approaches to encourage sustainability and wellbeing at local levels. It covers topical issues such the politics of prosperity, globalization, and indigenous notions of "the good life" and happiness". Finally it places a strong emphasis on food at the heart of the sustainability and good life debate, for instance binding the global south to the north through import and exports, or linking everyday lives to ideals within the dream of the good life, with cookbooks and shows. This interdisciplinary book provides invaluable insights for researchers and postgraduate students interested in the contribution of the environmental humanities to the sustainability debate.

Nordic Classicism presents the first English-language survey of an important yet short-lived movement in modern architectural history. It was through the Nordic classical movement that Scandinavian architecture first attracted international attention. It was the Nordic Pavilions, rather than Le Corbusier's modernism, which generated most admiration at the 1925 World Fair, and it was the Nordic classical architects – including Gunnar Asplund, Sigurd Lewerentz, and Alvar Aalto – who went on to establish Scandinavia's reputation for modern design. Yet this brief classsical movement was quickly eclipsed by the rise of international modernism, and has often been overlooked in architectural studies. The book explores the lives and works of various key contributors to Nordic classicism – with eleven chapters each focussing on a different architect and on one of the period's outstanding works (including the Stockholm Central Library, the Resurrection Chapel, and the Woodland Cemetery). Famous architects and their works are examined alongside many lesser-known examples, to provide a comprehensive and in-depth account. As we approach the centenary of many of the events to which the book refers, now is a timely opportunity to explore the key themes of the Nordic classical movement, its architects, their buildings and the social and cultural changes to which they were responding.

Gothic style and contemporary architecture worldwide Although largely overlooked in studies of architectural history, church architecture in a Gothic idiom outlived its 19th century momentum to persist worldwide throughout the 20th century and into the new millennium. Global Gothic presents a first systematic worldwide understanding of "Gothic" in contemporary architecture, both as a distinct variation and as a competitor to recognized modern styles.
