‘I am sir [sure] you will act as human bean’, wrote one distressed pensioner to Prime Minister Robert Menzies in 1953, pleading for assistance. Robert Menzies received 22,000 letters during his record-breaking 1949-1966 second term as Australian Prime Minister. From war veterans, widows and political leaders to school students and homespun philosophers. Ordinary citizens sent their congratulations and grievances and commented on speeches they had heard on radio. They lectured him, quoted Shakespeare and the Bible at him and sent advice on how to eliminate the rabbit problem. In Dear Prime Minister, Menzies’ fabled ‘Forgotten People’ write back. Revealed here for the first time, the letters respond to the royal visit of 1954, Communism, Australia’s British connection and the dire poverty of aged pensioners. For many writers, these were not post-war boom years, but a time of anxiety and conflict, punctuated by fears of war, another Great Depression, or a nuclear Armageddon. Dear Prime Minister is a fascinating insight into the concerns, assumptions and political beliefs of 1950s and 1960s Australians. 'An elegantly wry testament to a lost era of letter-writing, as Menzies’ ‘Forgotten People’ lay bare their assorted fears, gripes, hopes, sycophancy, paranoia, generosity, smugness, ingrained racism, sectarian prejudices, sometimes desperate poverty – and often atrocious spelling.' – Richard White

“I know you’re very busy, Mr. Harper. We’re all busy. But every person has a space next to where they sleep, whether a patch of pavement or a fine bedside table. In that space, at night, a book can glow. And in those moments of docile wakefulness, when we begin to let go of the day, then is the perfect time to pick up a book and be someone else, somewhere else, for a few minutes, a few pages, before we fall asleep.” From the author of Life of Pi comes a literary correspondence—recommendations to Canada’s Prime Minister of great short books that will inspire and delight book lovers and book club readers across our nation. Every two weeks since April 16th, 2007, Yann Martel has mailed Stephen Harper a book along with a letter. These insightful, provocative letters detailing what he hopes the Prime Minister may take from the books—by such writers as Jane Austen, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Stephen Galloway—are collected here together. The one-sided correspondence (Mr. Harper’s office has only replied once) becomes a meditation on reading and writing and the necessity to allow ourselves to expand stillness in our lives, even if we’re not head of government.

Hi there,My teacher said we should write persuasive letters to someone significant. Mr. Prime Minister is significant but he's always busy saying something on TV. So, I've written to his wife instead, to share my worrisome experience and ask her some (really) important questions every child would like to ask.Happy Reading.Izzy Christy Izzy Christy is nine years old. She wants her style of drawings and sketches to make her famous one day. Meet Izzy Christy and share her experience in this beautifully warm, and often funny tale, all told in Izzy Christy's own words. This report is concerned exclusively with the Gomery Commission's second mandate: to make recommendations, based on the factual findings of its first report, on a series of issues such as government transparency & accountability, the relationship between public servants and politicians, and the responsibilities that should be assigned to Parliament & parliamentarians. Part one outlines the reforms introduced by the federal government since the Commission was established in February 2004 and the suggestions the Commission heard from Canadians about what they felt should be done about accountability & transparency in government and other issues considered in the first report. Part two has five sections covering accountability issues, including the fundamental bases for the responsibilities & accountabilities of Ministers & senior public servants, the capacity of Parliament to hold the government to account, and the roles of the Prime Minister, Ministers, exempt staff, the Privy Council Office, and the Clerk of the Privy Council. Part three deals with more specific issues such as the future management of advertising & sponsorship activities as well as lobbying. It assesses measures to improve transparency, including legislative initiatives pertaining to information access, whistleblowing, sanctions related to failure to fulfil financial administration obligations, appointments to Crown corporations, and internal audits. Part four contains the Commission's consolidated recommendations which are also found throughout the report. The recommendations are designed to rebalance the relationship between Parliament & government, better assign responsibility, and strengthen accountability in the public interest.
