Have neoliberal policies truly yielded beneficial effects for India? ‘Two Decades of Market Reform in India’ presents a collection of essays that challenge the conventional wisdom of Indian market reforms, examining the effects of neoliberal policies enacted by the Indian government and exploding the myths that surround them. In particular, the volume questions the perceived benefits of India’s reform policies in the areas of growth, agriculture, industry and poverty alleviation, and examines how the government’s focus on preventing a fiscal deficit caused a large-scale decline in development expenditures, which in turn has had a negative impact on the well-being of the poor. With its rich and insightful analysis, ‘Two Decades of Market Reform in India’ bravely shines a light on the true implications of India’s neoliberal governmental policies, and provides a revealing indication of how policy reform since 1991 has, at times, detrimentally affected the general populace of India.

This book is a memoir that documents the experiences of Dr. Adejoke Fatunde following her graduation from the University of Ibadan Dental School in Nigeria in 1980. In the introduction, we get a glimpse of her educational foundation and the role that her family and upbringing played in preparing her for the future. Afterward, it tells of her experiences as a member of the pioneer dental class at the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Nigeria and the different challenges that accompanied being one of the first in the field of dentistry at that institution. Furthermore, being a pioneer at Ibadan provided her with opportunities for graduate dental education at the University of Michigan where she trained as an orthodontist with the Staff Development Scholarship from her alma mater. In return, the diverse experiences she has had as an orthodontist have presented her with a myriad of memorable opportunities. Indeed, capturing the memories of forty years after dental school has been a release of the intriguing maze, the diverse and ranging experiences she has navigated in the 40 years after dental school. On another note, her venture into dental public health appeared to have been born out of the uncertainty she faced during part of her orthodontic journey. However, it has proven to be non-accidental but, part of her mission to help increase access to dental care for those who cannot afford it. Primarily, the purpose of this memoir is to share her life with her progeny, other people who have influenced her professional development, and those who may wish to know a little more about her. Ultimately, it is a testimony to the goodness of God to her.

This book examines five features of Japan’s ‘Lost Decades’: the speed of the economic decline in Japan compared to Japan’s earlier global prowess; a rapidly declining population; considerable political instability and failed reform attempts; shifting balances of power in the region and changing relations with Asian neighbouring nations; and the lingering legacy of World War Two. Addressing the question of why the decades were lost, this book offers 15 new perspectives ranging from economics to ideology and beyond. Investigating problems such as the risk-averse behaviour of Japan’s bureaucracy and the absence of strong political leadership, the authors analyse how the delay of ‘loss-cutting policies’ led to the 1997 financial crisis and a state of political gridlock where policymakers could not decide on firm strategies that would benefit national interests. To discuss the rebuilding of Japan, the authors argue that it is first essential to critically examine Japan’s ‘Lost Decades’ and this book offers a comprehensive overview of Japan’s recent 20 years of crisis. The book reveals that the ‘Lost Decades’ is not an issue unique to the Japanese context but has global relevance, and its study can provide important insights into challenges being faced in other mature economies. On the first day back at school at Clee Grammar, Cleethorpes, the Head, Mr Shaw, started by saying “a new year and new decade “. It was Colin Shaw and it said C. Shaw on his office door. Appropriate for a seaside town! This got me thinking, At the age of 14. a decade had been a lifetime. The next decade would be another life time. In 10 years, I would have done my O and A levels, gone to college and may be even married! 10 years! I could not comprehend it. As it happened, each decade of my life did change dramatically. 50’s school. 60’s Grammar school and college. 70’s Family, allotment and weightlifting. 80’s O.U. and climbing UK. 90’s climbing Europe. 2000’s Retirement. 2010’s mountaineering worldwide and then 2020’s Covid! I started taking photos when I cycled over the Alps in 1964. Since then, I have amassed 7000 slides. 40 years later photography went digital and now I have another 10,000 or so. Therefore this little book is a photographic record of the changing decades of my life.
