The traumas resulting from terrorism and political violence have profound implications for the stability and normal operation of modern societies, and a negative impact on the effectiveness and legitimacy of their governments. This publication presents articles from the NATO Advanced Training Course (ATC) ‘Defence Against Terrorism: Different Dimensions and Trends of the Emerging Threat – Terrorism’ held in Kabul, Afghanistan in May 2010. This course was attended by serving Afghan officers of various ranks and also by a number of Afghan civilians, and was designed to have a practical focus for the participants, all of whom were involved in counterterrorism operations.The book begins with an overview of terrorism, which sets the stage for the articles of the other contributors. Subjects covered in the remainder of the book include the importance of social stability to the fight against terrorism; adjustments to change; the role of intelligence and the importance of international cooperation between intelligence agencies; suicide bombing; terrorism and organized crime; as well as future trends in terrorism. This title will be of great interest to all those concerned with countering the threat from terrorism and political violence.

Holidays in the Danger Zone exposes the mundane and everyday interactions between two seemingly opposed worlds: warfare and tourism. Debbie Lisle shows how a tourist sensibility shapes the behavior of soldiers in war—especially the experiences of Western military forces in “exotic” settings. The Five Dimensions of Homeland and International Security project set out to understand better the intersections between homeland and international security and the implications of these connections for preparedness. For decades strategists endeavored to develop theories that helped policy makers safeguard vital national interest during Cold War. The post 9/11 world raises the specter of violent non-state actors able to inflict mass casualties even on the most powerful country in the world. Hurricane Katrina reminded us of the violence of nature that can also have a devastating impact on the nation. This project considered whether some national security concepts can help orient homeland security thinking to promote preparedness. The objective is to enhance the security of our society by being prepared to address a range of challenges. The project explored the applicability of "5Ds": deterrence, denial, dissuasion, defense and diplomacy. The goal was not to slavishly apply traditional concepts, but to seek a nugget of insight from each to help forge new, effective ways to support preparedness. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11 policymakers' attention focused on securing the homeland; however, we suggest that shaping the international environment can enhance or detract from homeland security. International security concepts may provide ways to influence the international environment that makes preparedness more effective at home.
