The English interwar writer Arthur Ransome, best known for the ‘Swallows and Amazons’ children’s books, is noted for popularising the pattern for “holiday adventure” stories. A writer of various genres, his first success, ‘Bohemia in London’, is a partly autobiographical account of his early days. The teacher of Demosthenes, Isaeus was an early 4th century BC orator, who was later listed as one of the ten Attic orators, according to the Alexandrian canon. Nevil Shute was an English novelist and aeronautical engineer, who spent his later years living in Australia. His novels are written in a simple, highly readable style, with clearly delineated plots. George Washington Cable was an American author and reformer, noted for his stories dealing with Creole life in his native New Orleans.
