Porphyry of Tyre was a third-century Neoplatonic philosopher and follower of Plotinus. He edited and published ‘The Enneads’, the only collection of his teacher’s work. The father of geometry, Euclid was a Greek mathematician active in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I (323-283 BC). His treatise on geometry, ‘Elements’, is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the main textbook for teaching mathematics from the time of its first publication until the early twentieth century. Proclus the Successor was a fifth-century Greek Neoplatonist philosopher and the last major ancient Greek philosopher. He set forth one of the most elaborate and fully developed systems of Neoplatonism. Like Iamblichus, Proclus opposed Christianity and passionately defended paganism. The most learned of the Latin Fathers, Saint Jerome had an eventful life, spending time as a hermit, becoming a priest, serving as secretary to Pope Damasus I and later establishing a monastery at Bethlehem.
