Cataloging for School Librarians, Second Edition presents the theory and practice of cataloging and classification to students and practitioners needing a clear sequential process to help them overcome cataloging anxiety. By following the instructions in this book, the new cataloger will become proficient at creating bibliographic records that meet current national standards, and make library materials accessible to students and faculty. This new edition fully integrates RDA while referencing its antecedent, AACR2. FRBR, Sears, the Dewey Decimal Classification and the implications of Web-Scale Discovery services are covered. It presents numerous examples of how to catalog books, non-print and electronic library materials using the MARC format. To reinforce learning, each chapter concludes with a revised review quiz and critical thinking questions. Cataloging for School Librarians, Second Edition includes sample full MARC records, a glossary and an index.

Document from the year 2016 in the subject Library Science, Information- / Documentation Science, , language: English, abstract: The concept of subject cataloguing appeared on the scene in the mid-nineteenth century. Before then, descriptive cataloging was the only library cataloging that was practiced. Libraries were much smaller than they are today, and scholarly librarians then were able, with the aid of printed bibliographies, to be familiar with everything available on a given subject and guide the users to it. With the rapid growth of knowledge in many fields in the course of the nineteenth century and the consequential increase in the volume of books and other library materials, it became desirable to do a preliminary subject analysis of such works and then to represent them in the catalogue in such a way that they would be retrievable by subject. This is subject cataloguing. The choice of subject headings is based on some key principles. In this paper, I look at the concept of subject cataloguing in relation to the principles that govern the choice of the descriptive terms or subject headings.

The information environment is dynamic and requires cataloguers to respond to its fluid and active state. It demands that they work not only to describe the types of information resources available in a library collection, but also to show its users the relationships that exist between them. The goal of library cataloguing has always been to act as a catalyst for users' acquisition of information by providing description and access points that allow them to identify and distinguish items among resources contained within the library's collection as well as many beyond it. In a sense, cataloguers are interpreters of information resources. Introduces descriptive and subject cataloguing and classification as it is currently practised, and in particular introduces Resource Description and Access (RDA), the new set of cataloguing rules that replace the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR). The new rules represent the response of the international cataloguing community to the current global information environment. Their principal goal is to facilitate resource discovery with library catalogues in a more consistent and powerful way than was possible with AACR, and this book is a guide to how to use them to achieve bibliographic control. The key areas covered are: library cataloguing in the digital era; descriptive cataloguing; subject cataloguing; encoding catalogue records; sustaining and supporting the catalogue process. (EDITOR).
