This book equips readers with a sound understanding of research, theory and the practical aspects of job design. It critiques the theory and research which provide the foundations of our current understanding of job design, pointing to a need for methodological improvements and a broader conceptual focus. The authors examine recent innovations in manufacturing technologies, techniques and philosophies and how these affect work design, research and practice. They also look at wider trends in manufacturing and elsewhere, such as teleworking, downsizing, the development of a contingent workforce and the changing composition of the workforce. The volume describes how the redesign of work has implications for wider organizationa

The BIID Interior Design Job Book is the first book to set out the professional standard for running an interior design project. It does so step by step, in a sequence designed to complement the construction industry’s standard Plan of Work, providing guidance at every stage of a job from appraisal of the client’s requirements through to completion. Suitable for all interior design projects – whether small or large – and for both interior designers working in an integrated design team and those acting as lead consultant, it brings a codified procedure and a professional rigour to the way your practice works and the way your projects run – vital for achieving a professional edge in a competitive field. Its hands-on approach is supplemented by numerous model letters and specimen forms, which the designer can quickly adapt to any job in question.

Despite global competition and the need for speed, flexibility and quality, trends such as lean production and McDonaldization show that Taylorism remains alive and well in the contemporary workplace. There is however a countermovement, particularly in North-West Europe, where successful alternatives are being pursued. Job Design and Technology fills an important gap, by analyzing 150 cases of anti-Taylorist initiatives in Scandinavia, the UK and the Netherlands. It aims to show that real change can be achieved in the workplace and the quality of the working experience greatly enriched by moving away from the drudgery of the assembly line.

The organization of work is under critique in many industrialized countries. Bureaucracy, specialization, repetitive technology, and hierarchical control structures are criticized by politicians, trade unionists, and social scientists. They argue for improved quality of work, for work democratization, and for the humanization of work. This book evaluates Norwegian field ex periments in the area of job redesign which started already in 1964. Norway has therefore a lead in experience compared to most other countries, particu to the United States, where debates and subsequent experiments re larly volving around the quality of working life and the democratization of work started only in the early seventies. The Norwegian social scientists who left their academic bastions and started action research drew heavily upon the 'open socio-technical system' thinking as developed by the Tavistock Insti tute of Human Relations in London. This descriptive evaluation study ana lyzes the job redesign experiments from an industrial democracy perspective and places the experiments in their national political and labor relations contexts. Special emphasis is given to the actual and potential role trade unions can play in shopfloor job design projects. The industrial relations of the United States is generally used as reference point in this study. system The theory guiding the experiments regards work democratization through job redesign as a first step in a bottom-up process of organizational demo cratization.
