The Oxford English Dictionary is the internationally recognized authority on the evolution of the English language from 1150 to the present day. The last half-century has seen a large number of nationally-based or language-specific lexicographical projects. This volume is the fruit of comparative discussions on the majority of those projects which centre on medieval Germanic languages. The first half of the volume uses a standardized format to present the history, progress, impact of the project and the electronic specifications of the databases. The second half comprises seven studies on particular methodological problems or applications of work on these dictionaries.

The Dictionary of Old English (DOE) defines the vocabulary of the first six centuries (600 - 1150 A.D.) of the English language, and complements the Middle English Dictionary (which covers the period 1100 - 1500 A.D.) and the Oxford English Dictionary (which documents the development of the English language to the present).
