Emoticons matter. Equal signs do, too. This book takes them seriously and shows how and why they matter. Digital Shift explores the increasingly ubiquitous presence of punctuation and typographical marks in our lives⎯using them as reading lenses to consider a broad range of textual objects and practices across the digital age. Jeff Scheible argues that pronounced shifts in textual practices have occurred with the growing overlap of crucial spheres of language and visual culture, that is, as screen technologies have proliferated and come to form the interface of our everyday existence. Specifically, he demonstrates that punctuation and typographical marks have provided us with a rare opportunity to harness these shifts and make sense of our new media environments. He does so through key films and media phenomena of the twenty-first century, from the popular and familiar to the avant-garde and the obscure: the mass profile-picture change on Facebook to equal signs (by 2.7 million users on a single day in 2013, signaling support for gay marriage); the widely viewed hashtag skit in Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night show; Spike Jonze’s Adaptation; Miranda July’s Me and You and Everyone We Know; Ryan Trecartin’s Comma Boat; and more. Extending the dialogue about media and culture in the digital age in original directions, Digital Shift is a uniquely cross-disciplinary work that reveals the impact of punctuation on the politics of visual culture and everyday life in the digital age.

The Digital Shift is changing the world as we know it. The rise of Artificial Intelligence will create new business models, products and services – and ultimately change the way we live our lives. But in order to establish a new global prosperity paradigm, industry must finally start thinking radically from a human perspective. Currently a tool used only by the elite, Artificial Intelligence must become a tool for everyone. It must become personalised and transition to what we call Personal Intelligence. How? Predominantly through the discipline of design. In this fascinating book, Christian von Reventlow and Philipp Thesen have developed a series of radically new human-centric, design-led methods and models that will help corporations adjust to this new personalised technology and the increasingly digitised future.

This book is an in-depth study on the past, present and future of digitalization, an important contribution to the literature on the development of the digital economy in China. The technological revolution in telecommunications has brought a “seismic shift” - the periphery has moved to the center, accelerating the emergence of a new digital world. The adoption and integration of advanced digital technologies such as 5G mobile networks, the Internet of things (IoT), cloud computing, artificial intelligence, big data analysis and robotics means that the traditional economy, with its organizational, productive and governance systems, is merging with the digital economy, with its innovative features in terms of business models, production, business organization and governance. This makes the digital transformation process highly dynamic and complex, thus challenging many aspects of economies and societies. The author discusses not only what digital transformation means for businesses, but also its impact on society at large, inspiring readers to understand China and the world and think about what digital future we would like to have.

Our nation’s schools stand at an important “inflection point” in the history of education. Taken together, the implementation of common college and career standards, the shift to next generation assessments, the availability of affordable devices, and the growing number of high-quality digital instructional tools create an unprecedented opportunity to fundamentally shift the education system to personalize learning around the individual needs of every student. Digital Learning Now! (DLN), a national initiative under the Foundation for Excellence in Education (ExcelinEd), in association with Getting Smart, brings “Navigating the Digital Shift: Implementation Strategies for Blended and Online Learning” to readers interested in exploring the implementation challenges at the intersection of these shifts. Co-authored by John Bailey, Carri Schneider, and Tom Vander Ark, “Navigating the Digital Shift” offers updated versions of the eight papers originally released in the “DLN Smart Series” including contributions from 11 additional co-authors representing leading organizations such as Public Impact, the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL) and The Learning Accelerator. Topics include: blended learning implementation, teaching conditions and careers, competency-based learning, student data, online learning myths, and student-based funding. Jeb Bush, Governor of Florida from 1999-2007 and Chairman of ExcelinEd, contends that the book “provides policymakers and education leaders the tools they need to use digital learning as a catalyst for improved student achievement.” AASA 2013 Superintendent of the Year Dr. Mark Edwards believes the collection “provides meaningful, practical, and poignant advice as well as commentary regarding the move to college and career ready standards associated with the shift to personal online learning and digital resources.” Rhode Island’s Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Deborah Gist describes the book as an “invaluable resource that will help educators re-imagine what our schools can look like and what our students can accomplish.”

This book explores how the business transformation taking place in Japan is influenced by the digital revolution. The chapters present approaches and examples from sectors commonly understood to be visible arenas of digital transformation—3D printing and mobility, for instance—as well as some from not-so-obvious sectors, such as retail, services, and fintech. Business today is facing unprecedented change especially due to the adoption of new, digital technologies, with a noticeable transformation of manufacturing and services. The changes have been brought by advanced robotics, the emergence of artificial intelligence, and digital networks that are growing in size and capability as the number of connected devices explodes. In addition, there are advanced manufacturing and collaborative connected platforms, including machine-to-machine communications. Adoption of digital technology has caused process disruptions in both the manufacturing and services sectors and led to new business models and new products. While examining the preparedness of the Japanese economy to embrace these changes, the book explores the impact of digitally influenced changes on some selected sectors from a Japanese perspective. It paints a big picture in explaining how a previously manufacturing-centric, successful economy adopts change to retain and rebuild success in the global environment. Japan as a whole is embracing, yet also avoiding—innovating but also restricting—various forms of digitalization of life and work. The book, with its 12 chapters, is a collaborative effort of individuals contributing diverse points of view as technologists, academics, and managers.

The extent of digitalization and the use of digital tools no longer need to be demonstrated. While companies have been integrating the challenges of such a transformation for more than 20 years, the public sector is lagging behind. Digital Transformation and Public Policies studies the mechanisms of the digital transformation of public organizations. It explores how this new deal, driven mainly by platforms, resonates with new public policies and how digital technology is redrawing the relationship between the governors and the governed. This book, the result of transdisciplinary collaboration between researchers, aims to answer these questions by focusing on several cases: public innovation policies, health data and social policies with fiscal microsimulation devices.
