The culture of nineteenth-century Russia is often seen as dominated by realism in the arts, as exemplified by the novels of Leo Tolstoy and Ivan Turgenev, the paintings of 'the Wanderers, ' and the historical operas of Modest Mussorgsky. Paradoxically, nineteenth-century Russia was also consumed with a passion for spiritualist activities such as table-rappings, seances of spirit communication, and materialization of the 'spirits.' Ghostly Paradoxes examines the surprising relationship between spiritualist beliefs and practices and the positivist mindset of the Russian Age of Realism (1850-80) to demonstrate the ways in which the two disparate movements influenced each other. Foregrounding the important role that nineteenth-century spiritualism played in the period's aesthetic, ideological, and epistemological debates, Ilya Vinitsky challenges literary scholars who have considered spiritualism to be archaic and peripheral to other cultural issues of the time. Ghostly Paradoxes is an innovative work of literary scholarship that traces the reactions of Russia's major realist authors to spiritualist events and doctrines and demonstrates that both movements can be understood only when examined together.

In his book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century the historian Yuval Noah Harrari wrote that man had the possibility to conquer the world precisely because he could create fictional stories and believe in them. People created more and more complex stories about themselves that served and continue to serve, according to the professor of the University of Jerusalem, building unity, social harmony and gaining power. A narrative about past, in which memory fragmentation and victimisation play a large role, may be a temptation to instrumentalise the past. This is especially true in relation to the events of the twentieth century, when a series of bloody war conflicts occurred. As shown in the following post-conference volume, today the wars of the past (World War I and World War II, Indian-Pakistani war) and current conflicts (Russo-Ukrainian war, war in Sudan or Nagorno-Karabakh) are also a catalyst for the process of instrumentalisation. This process can be analysed both at the level of the evolution of the language of conflict, including the erosion of the values of democratic dialogue, and the use of specific means of commemorating the past (monuments, museums, the Internet).

Includes the original Russian text and, for the first time, an English translation of that version. “Antony Wood’s translation is fluent and idiomatic; analyses by Dunning et al. are incisive; and the ‘case’ they make is skillfully argued. . . . Highly recommended.”—Choice

Love can heal the rift between them. But can it survive an act of supreme cruelty? For five years, Natasha Sokolova has loved and cared for jewelry tycoon Dmitry Rostoff’s two children, Peter and Katia, on her own. Her nights haunted with achingly cruel dreams of unrequited love, and promises never made. Peter’s eighteenth birthday arrives. Dmitry is returning home to celebrate. Nathasha is five years stronger, five years smarter—and she’d rather die than give Dmitry the satisfaction of knowing he broke her heart. Dmitry put thousands of miles between him and the act of betrayal that nearly destroyed him. Only for Peter does he break his vow never to return, endure the ugly memories of an evil mother, and swallow his bitterness just long enough to make his son happy—then make his escape. One look at the beautiful woman who stole his heart—and the angelic daughter he once couldn’t bear to lay eyes on—loosens the knot of hatred coiled inside him. The desire to free himself from his past, and his family from the prison of the Rostoff estate, sparks a plan that Dmitry is certain will succeed.

Biomedical Defense Principles to Counter DNA Deep Hacking presents readers with a comprehensive look at the emerging threat of DNA hacking. Dr. Rocky Termanini goes in-depth to uncover the erupting technology being developed by a new generation of savvy bio-hackers who have skills and expertise in biomedical engineering and bioinformatics. The book covers the use of tools such as CRISPR for malicious purposes, which has led agencies such as the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence to add gene editing to its annual list of threats posed by "weapons of mass destruction and proliferation." Readers will learn about the methods and possible effects of bio-hacking attacks, and, in turn the best methods of autonomic and cognitive defense strategies to detect, capture, analyze, and neutralize DNA bio-hacking attacks, including the versatile DNA symmetrical AI Cognitive Defense System (ACDS). DNA bio-hackers plan to destroy, distort and contaminate confidential, healthy DNA records and potentially create corrupted genes for erroneous diagnosis of illnesses, disease genesis and even wrong DNA fingerprinting for criminal forensics investigations. Presents a comprehensive reference for the fascinating emerging technology of DNA storage, the first book to present this level of detail and scope of coverage of this groundbreaking field Helps readers understand key concepts of how DNA works as an information storage system and how it can be applied as a new technology for data storage Provides readers with key technical understanding of technologies used to work with DNA data encoding, such as CRISPR, as well as emerging areas of application and ethical concern, such as smart cities, cybercrime, and cyber warfare Includes coverage of synthesizing DNA-encoded data, sequencing DNA-encoded data, and fusing DNA with Digital Immunity Ecosystem (DIE)
