Doctoral Dissertations

This volume gathers the harvest of recent doctoral dissertations on South Asia, principally from North America and Western Europe, but exclusive of theses from universities in South Asia itself. The yield—1305 dissertations based on research carried out during the early and middle nineteen-sixties and brought to completion between 1966 and 1970—is even greater than one would have guessed, eloquent testimony to the expansion of South Asian studies in the West over the last decade. Doctoral Dissertations on South Asia seeks to be a comprehensive compilation of recently completed theses dealing in whole or in part with the former civilizations and the contemporary affairs of Ceylon, India, Nepal and Pakistan. At the same time, this work provides striking testimony of the dynamic growth of Asian Studies outside the subcontinent and particularly in the United States, Great Britain, Germany and France, where most of the major centers of scholarship are presently found. It is an interdisciplinary work covering the natural sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences.

This volume contains abstracts of seven doctoral dissertations completed during fiscal years 1972 and 1973 under research grants from the Manpower Administration. Abstracting for both volumes was done as part of a Manpower Administration project at the College of Business and Public Administration, University of Arizona. Because the editors took considerable liberty with the language, organization, and, in some instances, emphasis of the dissertations, bylines are omitted from the abstracts. However, dissertation authors were given the opportunity to review drafts and are fully identified on the next page, which also contains information on how to purchase copies of their dissertations. In addition, the full text of each dissertation may be read in the library of the university from which its author received his degree, and all are available in the library of the U.S. Department of Labor. The abstracts were prepared by the following graduate research associates (each a doctoral candidate) at the University of Arizona: Barry Bainton (anthropology), David Shaw (economics), and Marilyn Spencer (economics).

Indian Research In English Studies Has A Long And Rich Tradition But, Unfortunately, It Has Failed To Make Any Notable Impact On The Academic World. This Is Largely Due To The Fact That Most Of The Indian Doctoral Dissertations In English Studies Lie Buried In University Libraries And Are Inaccessible To Aspiring Researchers. No Attempt Has Been Made So Far To Establish Any Link Or Co-Ordination Between Research Activities Of Different Universities/Institutes. This Has Resulted In A Total Neglect Of Earlier Research And Unnecessary Duplication.The Present Volume Is Designed To End This Unhappy Situation By Providing A Complete And Authentic Account Of Research Carried Out In Indian Universities Not Only In British, American, Commonwealth And Indian English Literature But Also In Comparative Studies, Translation Studies, Language, Linguistics And Elt. Entries On The Above Mentioned Are Arranged Subject-Wise In Chronological Sequence And Are Followed By A Separate Section On Individual Authors In Alphabetical Order. Thus It Provides A Consolidated View Of Indian Research In English And Serves As An Invaluable Reference Manual.
