Beginning with the earliest records available describing the dental health of the Indians before the arrival of European settlers, Dr Gullett gives a detailed and carefully documented history of dentistry in Canada. He describes the unscrupulous tramp dentists who roamed the countryside years ago as well as their respectable contemporaries, and he traces the development of practice, education, and professional associations, as dentistry developed from an art to a science. The author spent five years gathering information for this book from public archives, libraries, personal interviews, and the records of the profession. The result is a lively and readable story told with a continuing concern for health services.

Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1916, Vol. 28: Official Organ of All Dental Associations in Canada At the risk of being a little tedious, I desire to go into this phase of the question as briefly as possible. Leaving out of the question, ptomaines and toxins. There are two ways by which micro-organisms bred in the mouth and in structures composing the mouth, can do a patient harm. One is by being absorbed into or forced to penetrate oral tissues and thereby find their way directly into the blood stream and the other is by being discharged into or cultured in the mouth cavity, taken as a result into the stomach and carried on into the intestines. Each of these conditions will have its own peculiar results. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1911, Vol. 23: Official Organ of the Canadian Dental Association It' is quite evident, according to researches made through the history of ages, that it has always been considered of more or less importance that the teeth, as well as other parts of the body, should be cleansed, in order that the individual might enjoy good health and the esteem of his fellows. The earliest Chinese works on medicine show that eighteen hundred years before Christ some attention was given to the care of the teeth. Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1912, Vol. 24: Official Organ of All Dental Associations in Canada This material for physical energy must be properly prepared for its passage through the alimentary canal, and the, alimentary canal itself must be kept-in the best possible condition to furnish nourishment which the whole body requires, each section of the canal performing its own special function in a normal, healthy manner. The mouth and teeth, being the entrance to this canal, are without doubt its most important parts. I need not dwell on'the importance of the part played by the mouth and teeth in the process of digestion. What I do wish to lay stress upon is the condition of the teeth 'and oral cavity and the effect of these conditions on the health and happiness and possibilities of service of the individual. Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1900, Vol. 12: Official Organ of the Canadian Dental Associations I find the general line Of topics worn threadbare, thus I take Dental Ethics as something admitting a plain talk to the stu dents about to go out into the world and fight for themselves. Definition of Ethiea - Doctrine Of morality, that philosophy which treats Of human duties, their grounds and Obligations. The first duty to yourselves and to your will-be patrons should be to aim high, for a low aim in our profession is more criminal than an honest failure. Conscientiousness should predominate, direct, and guide us all in our work. Without the resolution in your hearts to do good work, SO long as your hands have motion in them, and to do it whether the issue be that you die or live, no life worthy the name will ever be possible to you, while in once form ing the resolution that your work is to be well done, life is really won, now and forever.
