The three New Jersey beach resorts known collectively as The Wildwoods have recently been the subject of widespread notice for their unique concentration of mid-century commercial architecture. Known in The Wildwoods as Doo Wop, the style is mostly represented in the resorts' surviving motels, built between 1955 and 1970, and comes in a variety of forms: Modern, with jet-age glass walls; Vroom!, with thrusting pointed features; and Polynesian Pop, with thatched roofs and tiki torches. This fun, colorful book recounts the stories of the motels, describes their special features--from glorious neon signs to ubiquitous plastic palm trees--and covers the recent Neo-Doo Wop buildings that have risen in the wake of Doo Wop preservation.

The second edition of this guide to the "Garden State" reveals the historic, cultural, and ecological diversity of the state. Includes extensive coverage of the Jersey Shore and Atlantic City. New Jersey is a state full of wonders to surprise curious travelers and residents alike. This guide leads you away from the busy interstate highways to reveal the cultural, historic, and geographical diversity that lies beyond the New Jersey Turnpike. For wine connoisseurs, there are more than 25 wineries that offer tours, tastings, and festivals; for history buffs, New Jersey, known as the "Cockpit of the Revolution," offers battlefield state parks, monuments, and reenactments. And that's not all: New Jersey's 127-mile shoreline has many diverse communities, including the historic Victorian seaside resort of Cape May, itself a national historic landmark; the casinos of Atlantic City; the natural beauty of Island Beach State Park, with sand dune-scattered, long, white beaches, nature trails, birding, surfing, and guided kayak tours; and the hip shore town of Red Bank, with art galleries, boutiques, bistros, and jazz clubs. In addition, this comprehensive guide to the state includes opinionated listings of inns, B&Bs, hotels, and vacation cabins; hundreds of dining reviews, from diners to four-star restaurants; up-to-date maps; an alphabetical "What's Where" subject guide to aid in trip planning; and handy icons that point out family-friendly establishments, wheelchair access, places of special value, and lodgings that accept pets.

This is a visual history of the architecture of tourist accommodations in Maryland's famous beach resort. These have ranged from the Atlantic Hotel to the most recent chain hotels and condominiums that have so altered the streetscapes and skyline of the barrier island. Ocean City's architectural evolution paralleled national developments; it began on boardwalk-adjacent and beachfront sites with turreted and gabled cottages and shingle-clad Victorian hotels. By the 1920s, porticoed boardwalk hostelries emerged, and as the popularity of the automobile increased, auto camps and groups of cottages developed into motor courts and mom-and-pop motels during the mid-20th century. After the 1970s, lodgings changed, with infill condominium blocks, time-shares, and megastructures casting afternoon shadows across the beach.
