Unfortunately, it can also have a big impact on our planet. Earth Hour--a worldwide movement in support of energy conservation and sustainability--takes place each March and is sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). During Earth Hour, individuals, communities, and businesses in more than 7,000 cities turn off nonessential electric lights for one hour. Across each continent--from the Eiffel Tower to the Great Wall of China to the Statue of Liberty--one small act reminds all of us of our enormous impact on planet Earth.

A breathtaking new volume of poetry from an Australian literary icon. In his first full volume of poetry since Typewriter Music in 2007, David Malouf once again shows us why he is one of Australia's most enduring and respected writers. David Malouf's new collection comes to rest at the perfect, still moment of 'silence, following talk' after its exploration of memory, imagination and mortality. With elegance and wit, these poems move from profound depths to whimsy and playfulness. As Malouf interweaves light and dark, levity and gravity, he offers a vision of life on 'this patch/ of earth and its green things', charting the resilience of beauty amidst stubborn human grace.

A scientist known for unraveling the complexities of the universe over millions of years, Sir Martin Rees now warns that humankind is potentially the maker of its own demise -- and that of the cosmos. Though the twenty-first century could be the critical era in which life on Earth spreads beyond our solar system, it is just as likely that we have endangered the future of the entire universe. With clarity and precision, Rees maps out the ways technology could destroy our species and thereby foreclose the potential of a living universe whose evolution has just begun. Rees boldly forecasts the startling risks that stem from our accelerating rate of technological advances. We could be wiped out by lethal "engineered" airborne viruses, or by rogue nano-machines that replicate catastrophically. Experiments that crash together atomic nuclei could start a chain reaction that erodes all atoms of Earth, or could even tear the fabric of space itself. Through malign intent or by mistake, a single event could trigger global disaster. Though we can never completely safeguard our future, increased regulation and inspection can help us to prevent catastrophe. Rees's vision of the infinite future that we have put at risk -- a cosmos more vast and diverse than any of us has ever imagined -- is both a work of stunning scientific originality and a humanistic clarion call on behalf of the future of life.

Today, almost all countries of the world are facing the scourge of natural disasters caused by global warming. Rising temperature is increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters and the severity of their effects. The increase in the average global temperature has not happened all of a sudden, the real reason for this increase is the pro-capitalist/corporate world economic development model adopted by the governments of different countries. Most of the countries around the world, especially developed countries, have indiscriminately squandered natural resources in a blind race of economic growth. The research articles in this book are an attempt to analyze the global climate crisis, natural disasters, and economic growth. They trace the extent to which human beings have destroyed natural resources such as forests, water, land, and air in the name of economic development. The average temperature of the earth began to rise after the Pre-Industrial Revolution Period. Rapid global warming has caused the world's oldest and most developed countries to be affected by floods, heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires. Every day, one or another region of India is suffering from natural calamities, with the state of Uttarakhand and six states in the Western Ghats being on the brink of ruin. They also explain which countries around the world are now planning to overcome the climate crisis caused by global warming. The time to look at the facts and act on Climate Change is now, if every country takes bold steps for the pressing issues at hand, we can still change the trajectory of where humanity is headed. Everyday small acts by vigilant citizens can look like drops of water, but we should remember many tiny drops can make an ocean, these many small acts can surmount to something bigger. We must put in the time, though, and effort quickly and boldly. Here's to leaving our planet better than how we found it for the future generations to come.
