In 1945, John H. Johnson published the first issue of Ebony magazine, a monthly periodical aimed at African American readers. In 1973, the Johnson Publishing Company expanded its readership to include children by producing Ebony Jr!. Targeting Black children in the five to eleven age-range, the magazine featured stories, comics, puzzles, and cartoons. Its contents combined elements of Black culture, Black history, and elementary school curriculum. The publication remained in print until 1985 and was resurrected online in 2007.

In 1945, Ebony's legendary founder John H. Johnson set out to create a magazine for Black America much like that of the trailblazing Life Magazine, and that he did. For the African American community, Ebony has been a breath of fresh air, speaking on issues and events from the Black perspective, celebrating Black standards of beauty and elevating heroes of Black America--athletes, entertainers, activists, elected officials, or some combination thereof. Ebony: Covering Black America, by Lavaille Lavette, is a celebration of the treasure trove of the magazine's rich history, glamorous covers, groundbreaking cultural impact, and authentic coverage of Black American life from the magazine's inception to the present. "Ebony was Black America's social media long before the birth of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram", says Lavette. Ebony is based on a famous WWI charger that belonged to General Chapelle. The story opens with his birth in the stable of Hansall Manor where his arrival is greeted by family and staff. When he is four he goes to war with his mother, master and groom. The crossing is hazardous and terrifying for them and their equine comrades down in the hold of the ship. One by one the family and staff leave. Sally the parlour maid goes into the dangerous business of munitions. Bob the boot-boy runs away to join up. Jessica the General's daughter becomes a VAD. Only Molly, the fortune-telling cook, the General's wife and an old servant, are left. The horse hospitals at the front were provided and run by the Blue Cross Animals' Hospital entirely on voluntary donations. Everything possible was done for the horses. Lady Hamsall, along with many others in the country, worked incessantly to provide everything the horses needed. Ebony finally triumphs with his famous charge through the front line. 'Our Dumb Friends League' was the early name of the Blue Cross. Hopefully this story of Ebony might help his descendents today.

Brad Culley’s life has descended into chaos. Ebony has disappeared, leaving him to wonder if she ever really loved him, and so too his uncle’s assistant, Phillip, and six million dollars.
