Artificial intelligence, or AI, now affects the day-to-day life of almost everyone on the planet, and continues to be a perennial hot topic in the news. This book presents the proceedings of ECAI 2023, the 26th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, and of PAIS 2023, the 12th Conference on Prestigious Applications of Intelligent Systems, held from 30 September to 4 October 2023 and on 3 October 2023 respectively in Kraków, Poland. Since 1974, ECAI has been the premier venue for presenting AI research in Europe, and this annual conference has become the place for researchers and practitioners of AI to discuss the latest trends and challenges in all subfields of AI, and to demonstrate innovative applications and uses of advanced AI technology. ECAI 2023 received 1896 submissions – a record number – of which 1691 were retained for review, ultimately resulting in an acceptance rate of 23%. The 390 papers included here, cover topics including machine learning, natural language processing, multi agent systems, and vision and knowledge representation and reasoning. PAIS 2023 received 17 submissions, of which 10 were accepted after a rigorous review process. Those 10 papers cover topics ranging from fostering better working environments, behavior modeling and citizen science to large language models and neuro-symbolic applications, and are also included here. Presenting a comprehensive overview of current research and developments in AI, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings presented at the international workshops of the 26th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, ECAI 2023, which was held in Kraków, Poland, in September-October 2023. The papers in this volume were presented at the following workshops: XAI^3, TACTIFUL, XI-ML, SEDAMI, RAAIT, AI4S, HYDRA, AI4AI.

Technological advances related to legal information, knowledge representation, engineering, and processing have aroused growing interest within the research community and the legal industry in recent years. These advances relate to areas such as computational and formal models of legal reasoning, legal data analytics, legal information retrieval, the application of machine learning techniques to different legal tasks, and the experimental evaluation of these systems. This book presents the proceedings of JURIX 2023, the 36th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems, held from 18–20 December 2023 in Maastricht, the Netherlands. This annual conference has become recognized as an international forum where academics and professionals working at the intersection of law and artificial intelligence can exchange knowledge and experience. A total of 92 submissions were received for the conference, of which 18 were selected as long papers, 30 as short papers and 7 as demo papers following a rigorous review process. This represents an acceptance rate of around 20% for long papers (60% overall). Topics covered include formal approaches applied to various aspects of legal reasoning; machine learning and information retrieval methods applied to various natural language processing tasks; hybrid approaches to working on the frontier between symbolic and sub-symbolic methods; experimental inquiries into the interfaces between computational systems and legal systems; and network analysis in law. Providing a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the field, the book will be of interest to all those working at the intersection between law and AI.

Fuzzy systems and data mining are indispensible aspects of the digital technology on which we now all depend. Fuzzy logic is intrinsic to applications in the electrical, chemical and engineering industries, and also in the fields of management and environmental issues. Data mining is indispensible in dealing with big data, massive data, and scalable, parallel and distributed algorithms. This book presents the proceedings of FSDM 2023, the 9th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining, held from 10-13 November 2023 as a hybrid event, with some participants attending in Chongqing, China, and others online. The conference focuses on four main areas: fuzzy theory, algorithms and systems; fuzzy application; data mining; and the interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic and data mining, and provides a forum for experts, researchers, academics and representatives from industry to share the latest advances in the field of fuzzy sets and data mining. This year, topics from two special sessions on granular-ball computing and the application of generative AI, as well as machine learning and neural networks, were also covered. A total of 363 submissions were received, and after careful review by the members of the international program committee, 110 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference and publication here, representing an acceptance rate of just over 30%. Covering a comprehensive range of current research and developments in fuzzy logic and data mining, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field of data science.

Machine learning (ML) and intelligent systems are now comprehensively applied for the solving of practical problems. Emerging techniques such as big data analysis, deep neural networks, AI, and IoT have been adopted and integrated into the development and application of machine learning and intelligent systems, and their wide application in industry, medicine, engineering, education and other mainstream domains have made them a part of everyday life. This book presents the proceedings of MLIS 2023, the 5th International Conference on Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems, held as a hybrid event from 17-20 November 2023 in Macau, China. This annual conference aims to provide a platform for a knowledge exchange of the most recent scientific and technological advances in the field of ML and intelligent systems, and to strengthen links within the scientific community in related research areas. A total of 80 submissions were received for the conference, of which 20 papers were selected for presentation and publication in these proceedings following a rigorous peer-review process. Papers were assessed on originality, scientific/practical significance, compelling logical reasoning and language, and the selected papers cover a wide range of topics, and provide innovative and original ideas or results of general significance in the field of ML and intelligent systems. Providing a current overview of developments in the fields of machine learning and intelligent systems, the book will be of interest to all those working in this field.

FOIS is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications, a non-profit organization which promotes interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science. This book presents the papers delivered at FOIS 2023, the 13th edition of the Formal Ontology in Information Systems conference. The event was held as a sequentially-hybrid event, face-to-face in Sherbrooke, Canada, from 17 to 20 July 2023, and online from 18 to 20 September 2023. In total, 62 articles from 19 different countries were submitted, out of which 25 were accepted for inclusion in the conference and for publication; corresponding to an acceptance rate of 40 percent. The contributions are separated into the book’s three sections: (1) Foundational ontological issues; (2) Methodological issues around the development, alignment, verification and use of ontologies; and (3) Domain ontologies and ontology-based applications. In these sections, ontological aspects from a wide variety of fields are covered, primarily from various engineering domains including cybersecurity, manufacturing, petroleum engineering, and robotics, but also extending to the humanities, social sciences, medicine, and dentistry. A noticeable trend among the contributions in this edition of the conference is the recognition that improving the tools to analyze, align, and improve ontologies is of paramount importance in continuing to advance the field of formal ontology. The book will be of interest to all formal and applied ontology researchers, and to those who use formal ontologies and information systems as part of their work.

Information technology and digitalization are closely related topics, and both are intrinsic to many aspects of modern life. One important area to which they have particularly close links is lifelong education. This book presents the proceedings of DMI 2023, the 2nd International Conference on Digitalization and Management Innovation, held as a hybrid event from 1 to 4 August 2023 in Seoul, South Korea. The theme of the conference was Building a New Ecology of Lifelong Education, and the aim of the conference was to enable experts and scholars worldwide to share and debate the latest ideas in digitalization and management innovation as related to this subject. The 47 papers included here were selected from over 150 submitted papers after a thorough peer review process carried out by expert reviewers. Topics covered include the modern management of big data; interdisciplinary applications of digitalization and management innovation; and organizational behavior in digital transformation, among others. Offering an up to date overview of many aspects of digitalization and management innovation, the book provides a range of global perspectives which will be of interest to all those working in related fields.
