Ecmt Round Tables Transport And Economic Development

This publication contains contributions given at a round table meeting held in Paris in March 2001, including reports from participants from Germany, Canada, France, Israel and the UK. These analyse the arguments for and against the presumed correlation between investment in transport infrastructure and the promotion of economic development and employment opportunities, as well as the implications for transport policy.

This Round Table addresses the macroeconomic effects of transport infrastructure policies, and aimed at identifying tools that could determine the overall volume of public expenditure for transport infrastructure investment. It also identifies methods for assessing macroeconomic impact.

The Round Table examines the costs and benefits of sprawl, shedding light on the linkages between urban form and economic growth, and explored the tradeoffs involved in trying to contain sprawl.

To mark its hundredth Round Table on transport economics, the ECMT decided to publish a special issue. Fifty European experts were asked to submit papers examining not only the major issues addressed by transport economics in the past, but also those that are likely to emerge in the future.

This Round Table revisits the extended literature on the valuation of passenger time and discusses the under-researched topic of the value of time in freight transport.

The linkage between transport and economic development is a highly contentious issue which has generated considerable debate.
