Les œuvres écrites entre les langues ne se contentent pas de mélanger ou d’alterner des langues, par la tension de l’entre-deux, elles figurent à la fois la présence et le manque, la proximité et la divergence. Ce volume collectif, issu d’un colloque international co-organisé les 14 et 15 juin 2021 par l’Inalco, l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Aix-Marseille Université et l’Université d’Angers, avec la participation de la Chaire UNESCO pour le multilinguisme et avec le soutien de l’Institut du Tout-Monde et de la Maison des Écrivains et de la Littérature a été pensé lui aussi en tension entre des pratiques et des approches - de recherche, d’intervention, de création et de traduction - ancrées dans des épistémologies et des disciplines différentes. S’ouvrant par un entretien avec l’autrice et dessinatrice Zeina Abirached, il propose d’entrer dans le plurilinguisme littéraire à travers l’analyse de pratiques créatives entre les langues d’auteur.ices d’aires géographiques et linguistiques très diverses. Il présente ensuite un foisonnant espace de pratiques pédagogiques associant traduction et écriture créatives, entre les langues et les arts. Il a débouché sur une convention de partenariat de recherche, Lire et écrire entre les langues - LÉEL, 2022-2027 (https://ecriplur.hypotheses.org/category/leel) - pour fédérer, autour de la diversité des formes de lecture et d’écriture entre les langues, un réseau ouvert, où enseignant.es, chercheur.e.s, artistes, apprenant.e.s, actrices et acteurs locaux sont amenés à s’investir et dialoguer ensemble.

Literary Pluralities is a collection of essays on the connections between literature and society in Canada, focusing on the topics of race, ethnicity, language, and cultures. The essays explore a nexus of related issues, including the dynamics between race, ethnicity, class, gender and generation; Canadian multiculturalism, and its meaning within Aboriginal and Quebec communities; the politics of language; the new field of life writing; and international dimensions of the debates. Together, they present a valuable picture of Canadian and Quebecois cultural and literary criticism at the century’s end. Innovative and interdisciplinary in approach, this book explores the role of the mother tongue in second language learning. It brings together contributions from a diverse team of authors, to showcase a range of Francophone perspectives from the fields of linguistics, psychology, cross-cultural psychiatry, psychoanalysis, translation studies, literature, creative writing, the neurosciences, and more. The book introduces a major new concept: the (M)other tongue, and shows its relevance to language learning and pediatrics in a multicultural society. The first chapter explores this concept from different angles, and the subsequent chapters present a range of theoretical and practical perspectives, including counselling case studies, literary examples and creative plurilingual pedagogies, to highlight how this theory can inform practical approaches to language learning. Engaging and accessible, readers will find new ideas and methods to adopt to their own thinking and practices, whether their background is in language and linguistics, psychiatry, psychology, or neuroscience.

The volume convenes English- and French-speaking Canadianists who share a broad reflection on issues of exclusion and inclusion in Canadian contexts. It is through historical, but also linguistic, cultural and literary perspectives that we can unveil and learn more about the particular instances of inclusion and exclusion. The volume offers a kaleidoscopic view of Canadian history, politics, literature, and culture. The collected essays provide a discussion on a number of contemporary Anglophone and Francophone literary works, the evaluation of Canadian language policy, the reflection upon the literary canon as well as challenges of literary translation in a bilingual country, the distinctness of Black Lives Matter Canada, and, last but not the least, the historical status of New France.

In The Fictions of Translation, emerging and seasoned scholars from a range of cultures bring fresh perspectives to bear on the age-old practice of translation. The current movement of people, knowledge and goods around the world has made intercultural communication both prevalent and indispensable. Consequently, the translator has become a more prominent figure and translation an increasingly present theme in works of literature. Embedding translation in a fictional setting and considering its most extreme forms – pseudotranslation or self-translation, for example – are fruitful ways of conceptualizing the act of translating and extending the boundaries of translation studies. Taken together, the various translational fictions examined in this collection yield new insights into questions of displacement, migration and hybridity, all characteristic of the modern world. The Fictions of Translation will thus be of interest to practising translators, students and scholars of translation and literary studies, as well as a more general readership.

Entre-Textes introduces advanced students of French to the richness of the Francophone world through literature from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The course anthology is divided into fourteen modules, each of which pairs a classical text with a modern one. Students are guided to read works from different periods of time and cultural origin and consider how these echo, complement or question each other. Through comparing and contrasting the texts, students will develop a new approach to reading literature while simultaneously reinforcing linguistic and cultural competencies. Suitable for advanced students of French and featuring texts from across the French-speaking world, Entre-Textes is an innovative course anthology with a flexible structure and versatile methodology.

This book is the record of a colloquium held at Churchill College, Cambridge. It pursues lines of discussion radiating out from the core theme of the power of the image (understood in its pictorial, iconic, sensory and verbal senses). Writers, scholars and artists are grouped in pairs representing the two language-cultures (English and French). Central topics covered include the manifold ways in which our readings of pictorial images old and contemporary can bridge cultures, language politics and the politics of culture, the limitless and instructive senses of the concept of the ‘word’, the relation between orality and the written text, the implications of the act of writing, history and opera, the word in theatre, the influence of the Nobel Prize.... The terms of discussion universally urbane, effortlessly wide-ranging and deeply probing. Most importantly – and a reminder of how best to ensure literate wisdom in intercultural debate – is the fact that the contributors gathered here have avoided all ‘pre-packaging’ of their reflections in the shibboleth ‘discourses' (whether Freudian, poststructuralist, postmodern or postcolonial) of our time. The theme of this book cuts across disciplines. Contributors to this volume are specialized in education and especially classroom research as well as in linguistics, most being transdisciplinary themselves. Around 65 sub-Saharan languages figure in this volume as research objects: as means of instruction, in connection with teacher training, language policy, lexical development, harmonization efforts, information technology, oral literature and deaf communities. The co-existence of these African languages with English, French and Arabic is examined as well. This wide range of languages and subjects builds on recent field work, giving new empirical evidence from 17 countries: Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as to transnational matters like the harmonization of African transborder languages. As the Editors – a Norwegian social scientist and a Norwegian linguist, both working in Africa – have wanted to give room for African voices, the majority of contributions to this volume come from Africa.
