The twentieth century has been marked by the expansion of educational opportunities worldwide. It has been the century of education, and the role of the state in the promotion of public education has been decisive. Yet, at the millennium's turn efforts to diminish the role of the state are rapidly changing education, especially in terms of its role in democracy. This comprehensive handbook offers a fresh view of the social context of education, outlining the challenges as well as the advances in public and private education systems. The book offers a systematic account of current social theory and methodologies, applied perspectives on the development of education in many regions of the world, and compares key themes such as access, school choice, equity, and educational performance.

The global networking promoted by technology, globalization and migration that are occurring at a large scale, requires school systems that develop in the students new types of skills, based on the ability to understand the world and its problems and instill a sense of responsibility and cooperation to enhance the resolution of the great problems of mankind. Rethinking education is essential in a global, transcultural, changing and communicated world. Throughout the book Rethinking Education for a Global, Transcultural World is argued and analyzed how to build relationships between the school and society, and the possibilities of transcending the barriers in different national contexts: Chile, Israel, Mexico, Morocco, Poland, and Spain. The main goal we want to achieve with the contributions made in the book is to know how education systems and schools in different countries respond to the social changes caused by globalization, migration and new communication technologies. The authors are professors of different scientific disciplines and different faiths, cultures and points of view, living the realities described in the chapters and thinking from these realities how to improve and how should be the education in a global, challenging and ever-changing world. For this reason, this is a book designed for teachers of primary and secondary schools, parents, principals, supervisors, university teachers who prepare school teachers, university students and those who want to know and think about education in a global and intercultural world and new forms of communication to face learning, whether at local or at world level. The mission of all is continue building education, and to facilitate this work in this book are presented contributions and recommendations of professionals around the world that will allow the reader to know, analyze, understand and appreciate the importance of education to prepare students to function with open and critical thinking in a global world. Our educational system is in turmoil. Many would argue that it has been assaulted and oversimplified by the right. There is growing concern that we are becoming a liberal nation-state with an increasingly anti-liberal population and an electorate that is disinterested in politics. In this globalized world, the power of capital is so great that opposition to it is often discouraged and disheartened, leaving many citizens few political precepts by which to consider their institutions. This contemporary failure of vision has opened the way for the unimpeded return of the philosophy of the free market. As a result, social and educational policies are debated almost solely in terms of how they fit with the needs of the market. Social and ethical understandings are replaced by a failed economic theory that requires a radical constraint of our political and economic choices. Compassion for the poor, the market lets us know, is wrong-headed because any interference with the labor market will always result in unfortunate economic and social consequences. Moral issues are eclipsed by market needs. In Critical Pedagogy: Where Are We Now? the contributors discuss how the field of critical pedagogy should respond to such dire conditions in a way that is theoretically savvy and visionary, while concurrently contributing to the struggle to improve the lives of those most hurt by them. Critical Pedagogy is essential reading for every classroom teacher and pre-service teacher. It is also a valuable tool for use in undergraduate and graduate-level classrooms.
