Vivimos una situación que cuantitativa y cualitativamente difiere de la existente hace tan solo unas décadas, debido a la emergencia de un tipo de sociedad en la que aparecen nuevos problemas sociales, problemas reales que se añaden a los grandes y graves problemas tradicionales como el hambre, el analfabetismo, las guerras, las desigualdades norte-sur... y a problemas emergentes como el cambio climático y la degradación ecológica, la brecha digital y las nuevas adicciones provocadas por la tecnologización generalizada, la violencia (en todas sus formas) y las desigualdades desde la perspectiva de género, etc. El libro es una invitación a repensar la epistemología educativa y los espacios del conocimiento de la educación en la sociedad global. Y se hace precisamente ahora, en un momento en el que las teorías globalizadoras comienzan a diluirse, reforzando nuevos marcos de referencia en la producción de los discursos educativos. En esta transición a una globalización alternativa planteamos la idea de abordar la educación en una sociedad que demanda nuevas formas de relación con las políticas públicas internacionales y locales, pero, sobre todo, en la que se constata la necesidad de que de estas actuaciones institucionales deriven en mayores compromisos para la construcción de modelos educativos más sociales, igualitarios y democráticos.

Our educational system is in turmoil. Many would argue that it has been assaulted and oversimplified by the right. There is growing concern that we are becoming a liberal nation-state with an increasingly anti-liberal population and an electorate that is disinterested in politics. In this globalized world, the power of capital is so great that opposition to it is often discouraged and disheartened, leaving many citizens few political precepts by which to consider their institutions. This contemporary failure of vision has opened the way for the unimpeded return of the philosophy of the free market. As a result, social and educational policies are debated almost solely in terms of how they fit with the needs of the market. Social and ethical understandings are replaced by a failed economic theory that requires a radical constraint of our political and economic choices. Compassion for the poor, the market lets us know, is wrong-headed because any interference with the labor market will always result in unfortunate economic and social consequences. Moral issues are eclipsed by market needs.
