Education And Training In Health Informatics In Europe

A European wide survey on the EDUCTRA (Education and Training in Health Informatics) Concerted Action, was commenced in 1992 under the auspices of the AIM (Advanced Informatics in Medicine in Europe) programme. This book consists of four parts. The first chapter reproduces the original EC Recommendation and outlines the concerted European efforts in education and training in health telematics made by the European Commission, DG XIII Health Telematics office. The second part provides the general guidelines for European curricula in health informatics as they were developed and elaborated by the members of the EDUCTRA Concerned Action (1992-1994). The third part of this volume entails the detailed descriptions and applications of curricula in health informatics in European states. The fourth part consists of a glossary of terms and acronyms used in current research and practice of health informatics. The work provides a comprehensive overview of the current needs in health informatics in Europe but also the necessary guidelines, materials, tools and applications for improving education and training within the near future. After the success of the first two books with the proceedings of the newly established series of European conferences in Health Telematics Education the third one gives a new dimension in the field of Health and Medical Informatics Education in Europe. It deals with the needs and the current status in Health Telematics Education in Europe, with curriculum development in Health- Medical and Nursing Informatics, with development of courseware material, computer based training and computer assisted learning. Also distance learning and Internet applications, training in using Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and Departmental Information Systems, Inter-University programmes and accreditation of courses are discussed.

This volume seeks to reflect the state of the art on medical informatics. It presents ideas that will guide the process of medical informatics. Throughout the world, healthcare professionals often lack knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of systematically processing data, information and knowledge and of the resulting impact on quality decision-making. They are often asked to use information technologies of which they have limited appreciation in order to enhance their practices through better use of information resources. However, for systematically processing data, information and knowledge in medicine and in healthcare, healthcare professionals who are well-trained in medical informatics or health informatics are needed. It will only be through improved education of healthcare professionals and through an increase in the number of well-trained workers in health and medical informatics that this lack of knowledge and associated skills can begin to be reversed. Although we can recognize further progress in educating health and a considerable number of educational programs for health informatics/medical informatics specialists have been set up, there is still a need to enhance these educational activities world wide, considering global developments as well as new curricular concepts and technological opportunities. This book is especially helpful for educators in the field of health/medical informatics.

This book reviews and defines the current state of the art for informatics education in medicine and health care. This field has undergone considerable change as the field of informatics itself has evolved. Twenty years ago almost the only individuals involved in health care who had even heard the term “informatics” were those who identified themselves as medical or nursing informaticians. Today, we have a variety of subfields of informatics including not just medical and nursing informatics, but informatics applied to specific health professions (such as dental or pharmacy informatics), as well as biomedical informatics, bioinformatics and public health informatics. The book addresses the broad range of informatics education programs available today. The Editor and experienced internationally recognized informatics educators who have contributed to this work have made the tacit knowledge explicit and shared some of the lessons they have learned. This book therefore represents the key reference for all involved in the informatics education whether they be trainers or trainees.

This volume focuses on the activities on Health Telematics Education. In Europe, coordinated activities in healthcare informatics education started in the late 1980's with the establishment of European Courses in Health Teematics. At the same time the European Commission foresaw the need for spreading the knowledge of IT in the Healthcare Sector. Therefore the EC, since then, have supported the initiatives that aim to create awareness, stimulate diffusion, educate and train the users (healthcare professionals) in the application of Information Technology to the Healthcare Sector. Such an initiative is the NIGHTENGALE project which is an essential project in the planning and implementation of strategy timing the Nursing profession in using and applying healthcare information systems, as well as, the IT EDUCTRA project which covers a more wide spectrum of the Health Telematics Education. The objective of this book is to promote the appropriate use of the developed Telematics infrastructure across Europe by educating and training healthcare professionals in a harmonising way across Europe in the upcoming field of Health and Nursing Informatics. For achieving this objective the European Commission established a series of European Conferences on Health Telematics Education, and Workshops by experts (users, developers and policymakers). In this book the Proceedings of the first European Conference in 'Health Telematics Education' (HTE'96), organised by the NIGHTINGALE project and supported by the IT EDUCTRA project, are included as well as the minutes and the presentations of the NIGHTINGALE Workshops.
