Excerpt from Elementary Russian Grammar While I undertook the interesting task with some eagerness, I was well aware of its difficulty. It would have been easy indeed to compile a satisfactory tabulation of rules and paradigms for cursory study and systematic reference, and such a booklet might have proven fairly useful for the needs of traditional reading by means of translation. But my ingrained conviction of the limitations of such a study of a modern foreign language turned me from that line of least resistance and made it incumbent upon me to embody even in this modest booklet the most essential features of what is generally termed the direct method, representing both my theoretical views and the results of twenty years' experience in the teaching of several foreign languages, Russian among them. This implied a number of peculiar complications. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Russian Grammar The accompanying volume is a practical rather than a scientific grammar. It is intended for the use of those students who are working under a teacher able to explain the difficulties of the language to them, and also for the use of those who are working at the language by them selves with the object of being able to read it; but it does not profess to be an adequate means of teaching any one working alone how to speak Russian. As it is an elementary book, philological references and comparisons and etymological explanations have been avoided, in order not to discourage the beginner. The most important points of the syntax that could be included in a book of this size have been mentioned, not in a part by themselves, but incorporated in the morphology. Excerpt from Practical Russian Grammar, Vol. 1 Personal experience in commencing the study of Russian, con firmed by more recent experience in teaching classes supplied with one of the best of existing manuals, has convinced the compiler of this book that Russian grammar, if presented from the same end as that at which the study of Latin or French or German is usually begun, will always appear to be more formidable than it is. This book, the manuscript of which was practically complete before the end of December 1916, is an attempt to deal with the subject starting from a rather unusual point. The plan, however, once it is explained, may commend itself to teachers working with classes of younger pupils and to adult private students, and it is hoped that it will justify the book's claim to the title of a practical' grammar.
