Excerpt from Sources of Interest in High School English The purpose of this book is to show what relation litera ture bears to the youth. The subject is treated from the standpoint of the various types of literary art forms with a View to determine how the different elements of this art interest the readers, and at what stage of development they are most potent. The particular field covered is the high school period, but the grade immediately preceding this has also been considered, in order to show the transition from grammar to secondary schools. The general subject relation of literature to children has been treated before, but under different school condi tions and with a different literary purpose in view. Clark Wissler (pedagogical Seminary, vol. 5) conducted an investigation of the reading of some 2000 children in Indiana schools, based upon the selections in the class readers, from the second to the fifth year. He deals with children of an earlier age than those considered in this book, and he makes no attempt to find elements of inter est in the several classes of literature; but his classification of selections is practically the same as this, and the choice of literary works shown in his report is of interest for com parison with that of older pupils. Excerpt from The High School Course in English While the plan of the work has been made as flexible as possible in order to adapt it to different schools, it has seemed desirable to indicate definitely how all of the details of the course should be organized and what methods should be used to bring about the required results. The object has been to consider the purpose of each part of the English work, and to show as specifically as possible what must be done and to some extent how it must be done to accomplish this purpose. By having a' definite aim for each year's work and by seeing clearly what is to be accomplished in each part of the subject, the teacher of English feels responsible for the successful completion of a specific part of the course. At the same time the originality and ability of the teacher need not be ham pered by a definite plan but may be exercised in adapting the work to different conditions in different schools and classes. In discussing the course in English, the general aim and methods in teaching the important elements, composition and reading, are taken up first, and then the particular phases of each subject to be presented in each year, are considered.
