Excerpt from Elements of Pharmacology The following d104-Book is intended to serve as a pharmacological commentary on the Second Edition of the German Pharmacop ia. It contains in abstract only that part of the science of remedies upon which it falls to the Pharmacologist to form a judgment, and it is therefore neither a book of prescriptions nor a compendium of treatment. The latter does not concern the Pathologist, but the Physician and Clinician. The extent of and modern method of regarding Practical Medicine on the one hand, and Pharmacology on the other, do not permit the teaching of both subjects to be united in one person, on account of the danger that dilettanteism might interfere with one or other of them. Without pharmacological knowledge, the practitioner will always grope about in darkness as regards the application of remedies. To supply this knowledge is the task of the Pharmacologist. He is not, however, in a position to give directions to the Physician as to the treatment of disease; he must be contented, in formulating a science of remedies, to describe the actions of powerful agents in their practical application, more especially with respect to man, to characterise the consequences which follow the use of such means, under different conditions, for the entire organism, and from pharmacological facts to formulate general rules for the employment of remedies. Excerpt from The Elements of Pharmacy, and of the Chemical History of the Materia Medica With this view, the means of research are first considered generally as the structure and use of the thermometer, the balance, and the weights and measures, now used in this country; respecting which, there is given a historical ac count of the introduction of the' several species of weights and measures into this country, and tables, not only of the Roman weights, still used by Latin writers, but also of those of the Saxons and Danes, from whom some of our weights are derived. Nor are the French, German, and Swedish weights and measures, often mentioned in chemical works translated from those languages, left unnoticed. This is succeeded by an account of the different methods of ascertaining the density, or specific gravity of substances; and the mode of operating upon the various species of air, or what are now more usually called by their Flemish name of gas introduced into che mistry by Van Helmont. Excerpt from Elements of Materia Medica and Pharmacy: Two Volumes in One IN composing the following work, the object which I princi pally had in View was to render more useful the lectures I deliver, on the subjects of which it treats. I could not doubt of the advantages to be derived from an outline which pre sents to the student the general arrangement of the course, and a summary of the leading facts and principles which it is designed to illustrate. And I deemed this the more necessary, as the classification of the Materia Medica, which I have adopted, and some of the views of the operations of medicines, are different from those which have hitherto been proposed. Excerpt from Pharmacology and Therapeutics In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States Pharmacopoeia, so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The eighth decennial revision of the Pharmacopoeia has given the many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two dis tinct parts, the first being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy, and this, the second, to Pharmacology and Thera peutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work the classification employed is based on'jtqie par ticular physiological systems upon which the various drugs or other agents principally act. There is a complete list of drugs and preparations, without special description, except as to dosage, and very elaborate accounts of their physiological action and therapeutics are given. In these descriptions the effort has been made to present the latest views of the highest authorities in these departments, and to render the book as practically use ful as possible by full details regarding treatment. The two works combined offer, it is believed, a very complete and up to - date presentation of the whole subject of Materia Medica and Therapeutics.
