Energy Demand In Asian Developing Economies

This text reviews the relevant economic and econometric theory, introduces some econometric techniques, and uses these techniques to analyse energy demand in the Asian developing economies individually and taking the region as a whole.

The author examines the measurement and conceptual issues that complicate analytical work in the energy demand field. Successful policy decisions depend on the use of appropriate data and analytic methods; because the demand side of the energy-economy interaction is highly complex, this study focuses on the more basic economic and energy concepts and methods in demand analyses. He critiques measures used to analyze the relationship of energy to economic growth and summarizes the various demand estimation methods and their results. Highlighting the problems faced by analysts in developing countries who often have limited time and inadequate data, she discusses the serious implications of basing policy decisions on questionable analytic methods and data.

The Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative is the global effort rallying action towards a transformation in the energy sector by the year 2030. With targets to increase energy use, expand energy efficiency, and ensure energy access for all, SE4All's priorities are tied closely to the challenges of developing Asia and the Pacific, which is confronting issues of energy sustainability, security, and widespread energy poverty. In the interest of combining efforts and resources to meet the challenge, the Asian Development Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific have partnered to act as the leading organizations for the SE4All Regional Hub for Asia and the Pacific. Together, they are supporting actions among developing countries in the region that will put them on track to transform their energy sectors, in line with SE4All. This report summarizes the initial activities of the Regional Hub, and contextualizes the challenges in Asia and the Pacific with the global efforts to reach the 2030 targets.

The contributors to this book review the environmental problems created by rising energy demand, and examine their impact on the oil industry especially in the Asia-Pacific region where future demand for oil is projected to increase the most. Policy options to minimize energy-related environmental problems are discussed.
