Engaging With A Nation

Five aspects of minority community engagement in national security issues were examined: two concerned engagement in specific minority communities (Muslim and Latino), one a "field" of engagement (public health), one a traditional type of engagement (military service), and one a prerequisite for successful community engagement (effective leadership). The five aspects included (1) dynamics of engaging the growing Latino community, with emphasis on police department best practices to include Latino concerns and participation in community security; (2) participation of the Muslim community in planning for and response to natural disasters and terrorism threats; (3) providing public health services to all at-risk communities, which are often minority or those with significant minority populations; (4) the relationship between the military and its minority officers; and (5) aspects of service and leadership in minority communities.

Evangelical churches are widely known for their commitment to mission locally and to the ends of the earth. However, in the last century, there have been profound theological and sociological changes that have impacted mission practice. Church and mission leaders have encouraged Christians to respond to the need for mission locally, especially as church decline accelerates in much of the Western world. Yet others are concerned that global mission involvement is being neglected in many local churches. This study explores the factors influencing local church participation in mission both locally and around the world. Through an in-depth analysis of the practices and perspectives among evangelical churches in Australia, the author identifies a range of theological, missiological, and organizational influences on mission practice. Though beliefs about the church, the world, and mission are important, understanding organizational principles, social capital, and the power of relational networks provides invaluable insights into church-mission practice. This book is for those who long to see local churches committed to engaging both their neighbors and the nations in mission, growing our understanding of how to encourage helpful church practices for the sake of Christ.

This publication explores different challenges posed to home and host country governments engaging with their diasporas for development purposes. Topics covered include: defining and gathering data on diasporas; incorporating diaspora contributions into development strategies; partnering with relevant diasporas; home country programmes and incentives conducive to diaspora contributions; identifying resources available within diasporas and how their impact on development can be maximised.

This document has been created with the aim of highlighting the significant advances by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in engagement and support to its ten member countries in implementing their national Codex activities. The authors consolidated inputs provided by the national focal points together with FAO country offices. This report supersedes the previous version entitled “Status of National Codex Activities” published in 2012. It also provides information for food safety competent authorities in the government sector outside of the ASEAN region. In addition, the intention is that the document will help to indirectly strengthen collaboration within the region through the discussion and benchmarking of good practices. This document will also serve as the new baseline for the success of further projects and improvements made by the countries and FAO in strengthening capacities for enhancing Codex Alimentarius activities in ASEAN.

This book provides a critical insight into China's evolving socio-cultural relations with Islamic countries in the face of growing geopolitical uncertainty. Engaging the United Nations is an accessible introduction to the UN and a guide to prepare for a Model UN simulation. Each chapter is introduced by a comic that relates the parallel stories of two young women, one a refugee on the receiving end of international institutions, and the other a recent college graduate whose work shows the bureaucratic side of the UN. Each chapter has three sections: Content, which discusses theory, history, and facts like a standard textbook; Skills, which focuses on the essential skills of research, writing, effective communication, and diplomacy needed to excel as a delegate to a Model UN conference; and Exercises, which explores these skills in a classroom setting. The plight of refugees is central to the narrative of the comic portion of the text, and a portion of the proceeds of this book will be given to refugee assistance efforts.
