English A Changing Medium For Education

In this volume a range of authors from different international contexts argue that the notion of communicative competence in English, hitherto largely referenced to metropolitan native-speaker norms, has to be expanded to take account of diverse contexts of use for a variety of purposes. It also discusses the popular belief that language and literacy should simply be regarded as a technical 'skill' which confers universal benefits and that it should be replaced with a social practice view that recognises situated variations and diversity. This volume, we believe, provides a reference point for extended research and practice in these areas that will be of interest to wide range of people engaged in language and literacy education.

This book presents the multiple facets of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in higher education across various academic disciplines, an area that is expected to grow constantly in response to the competitive global higher education market. The studies presented were conducted in various EMI classrooms, with data collected from observing and documenting the teaching activities, and from interviewing or surveying EMI participants. Through data analysis and synthesis, cases across disciplines – from engineering, science, technology, business, social science, medical science, design and arts, to tourism and leisure service sectors – are used to illustrate the various EMI curriculum designs and classroom practices. Although the cases described are limited to Taiwanese institutions, the book bridges the gap between planning and executing EMI programs across academic domains for policy makers, administrators, content teachers, and teacher trainers throughout Asia.

This volume investigates the policy and practice of medium of instruction at different levels of education in Asian polities including Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Maldives, Nepal, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. This book is the first to offer a conceptual framework of English-medium education that can be used across different international higher education (HE) contexts. It provides readers with an understanding of the complexities, possibilities and challenges that this phenomenon raises in the 21st century. Making the case for the pressing need for an overarching conceptualisation, the authors discuss, from a theoretical point of view, the recently introduced ROAD-MAPPING framework for ‘English Medium Education in Multilingual University Settings’ (EMEMUS).
