English Spanish Dictionary Of Plant Biology Including Plantae Monera Protoctista Fungi And Index Of Spanish Equivalents

In the field of ecology there has been a surprising lack of adequate tools for making the abundant literature published in English linguistically available to the Spanish-speaking world, and vice versa. The present dictionary has been compiled in order to fill this gap. The intense cooperation of a professional translator and an ecologist has produced a work which combines thorough scientific treatment with pragmatical evaluation of needs. The user of this dictionary will find ample terminology on plant ecology and complementary sciences such as plant physiology, edaphology, biostatistics, environmental science, forestry, climatology, plant geography etc., both in English and in Spanish, with concise definitions or explanations, as well as corresponding or equivalent terms in the other language. This book is particularly valuable for investigators, teachers, students and translators of ecology, plant and environmental sciences, and useful for any person studying, defending or interested in the life conditions of land plants.

The English-Spanish Dictionary of Plant Biology has been written to fill a need for increased communication between English and Spanish speaking people who are working in or are being affected by the many sub-fields of plant biology. Its general purpose is to aid, stimulate, and facilitate a two-way flow of information and understanding between the peoples of North, South, and Central America in an era of economic and environmental interdependence. Included are plant-related terms from the fields of botany, ecology, genetics, taxonomy, oceanology, microbiology, physiology, cytology, marine biology, forestry, silviculture, horticulture, anatomy, organology, phytopathology, agriculture, biochemistry, paleobotany, phenology, photobotany, phycology, systematics phytology, phytogeography, phytochemistry, phytosociology, morphology, pomology, and ethnobotany.

It was a compliment to me to be asked to prepare the fourth edition of Westcott's Plant Disease Handbook, and the decision to accept the responsi bility for the fourth edition and now the fifth edition was not taken lightly. The task has been a formidable one. I have always had a great respect professionally for Dr. Cynthia Westcott. That respect has grown considerably with the completion of the two editions. I now fully realize the tremendous amount of effort expended by Dr. Westcott in developing the Handbook. A book such as this is never finished, since one is never sure that everything has been included that should be. I would quote and endorse the words of Dr. Westcott in her preface to the first edition: "It is easy enough to start a book on plant disease. It is impossible to finish it. " This revision of the Handbook retains the same general format contained in the previous editions. The chemicals and pesticides regulations have been updated; a few taxonomic changes have been made in the bacteria, fungi, and mistletoes; the changing picture in diseases caused by viruses and/or viruslike agents has been described. A few new host plants have been added, and many recently reported diseases as well as previously known diseases listed now on new hosts have been included. In addition, photographs have been replaced where possible, and the color photograph section has been retained.
