Environmental Education Communication For A Sustainable World

This document targets organizations and practitioners developing an environmental education or communication project. The manual presents case studies to share experiences, information, and models of working in education. There are 15 chapters in 4 sections. Section One entitled "Fundamental Concepts in Environmental Education and Communication" (EE&C) includes: (1) "GreenCOM Weaves Four Strands" (Martha C. Monroe, Brian A. Day, and Mona Grieser); (2) "Thinking about Behavior" (Orlando Hernandez and Martha C. Monroe); and (9) "Evaluation" (Orlando Hernandez). Section Three entitled "Conducting EE&C Activities" includes: (10) "Building Capacity through Training" (Martha C. Monroe and Nina Chambers); (11) "Media Campaigns" (Brian A. Day); and (12) "Putting People into Policy" (Raisa Scriabine and Brian A. Day). Section Four entitled "Putting It All Together" includes: (13) "El Salvador's National Environmental Education Strategy" (Jose Ignacio Mata); (14) "The Gambia Environmental Awards Scheme--Creating Environmental Awareness through Participation" (Irma Allen); and (15) "Water Conservation in Jordan: A Novel Approach to Curriculum Development" (Mona Grieser, Barbara Rawlins, and Khulood Tubaishat). A publication from IUCN's Commission on Education and Communication (CEC), this book tells the stories of people who work with communities to motivate them to create a more sustainable future. The accounts range from engaging communities through theatre to a revival of indigenous stories to pass on good environmental practice. The publication was produced both to share what educators around the world have learnt and to give them a platform to tell their stories.

A group of international communication and environmental specialists have put together a reader on environmental communication (EnvCom) that show-cases related concepts, success stories and lessons learned in this field. The book, written in a non-academic language, lobbies for the recognition, support and replication of «best practices» in EnvCom with policy and decision makers of donor and receiver organizations, especially in Third World countries. Readers who may most benefit from the book are middle management planners at NGOs, government agencies, and development organizations who run environmental projects as they will learn how to integrate EnvCom as a management tool into planning and implementation. This will also be relevant to environmental project staff of those organizations who are supposed to put communication and non-formal education into practice.

There is a dearth of literature on environmental communication within the non-western world. The few existing ones are scattered and not easily available.Thus, there is a dire need to document research and literature in the field. The opportunity arose at the 2009 International Conference on Communication and Environment held in Penang, Malaysia. The international conference with the theme “Transformation for a Sustainable Tomorrow”, organised by the School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), attracted scholars, practitioners and activists from around the world to listen and deliberate on various aspects of communication and environment. The post-conference review resulted in the selection of 24 papers to be compiled into this edited volume. The escalating degradation of environment locally and globally was the main concern that prompted discussions on how sustainability can be advocated. The development process in many countries, economic activities and political decisions on issues such as deforestation for timber logging, rapid urbanisation, pertinently points out that environmental degradation and any communication on environmental change has to be grounded and located within the wider context of social, politics and economics of the society. Communication and environmental communication for that matter have also to be understood within these wider contexts. Many would agree that a constant and consistent flow of information communicated through different channels to different stakeholders at the right time and destinations can help raise awareness and consciousness of environmental problems, protection and preservation. This vital information can enable the public and stakeholders to make informed choices, and take actions whenever possible. A lack of communication and information will inordinately exacerbate the situation of environmental degradation. This book thus highlights how the environment is being treated in the media, communicated to the society and impacted nations. The chapters are grouped into the following sections: Theoretical and conceptual issues; Media content and the environment; Politics, communication and the environment; Corporate social and environmental responsibility; and Citizen participation, human rights and the environment. Global climate change will alter the environmental forces of today and increasingly affect weather patterns, rises in temperature, and government policies for decades to come. To provide future generations with the knowledge and resources needed to develop solutions for these ongoing issues, current shortcomings in environmental education need to be addressed. Building Sustainability Through Environmental Education is a collection of innovative research on methods and applications for creating comprehensive environmental education programs that support sustainability practices and instruct students on a variety of topics including water resource management, disaster risks and mitigation, and issues surrounding climate change. This Book presents innovative and state of the art studies developed in Environmental Education in different countries to highlight this theme and promote its implementation all over the world. It will give a scientific perspective of Nature-based solutions to promote environmental education in all citizens and a more educational perspective as to how this approach can be implemented at schools and universities. Not less important is that includes science communication as a key factor for training and disseminating about the environment. The invited authors are recognized experts with excellent work developed in Environmental Education. This contributed volume presents innovative and creative work in the area giving a step forward in the implementation of Environmental Education, namely as a target of 2020 United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development. The invitation of authors from many different countries allows the creation of a network and subsequently the book will bring concrete ideas as to how to develop operational capacities to bring added values to Environmental Education at an international level.

In 2005, The United Nations launched its Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, which recognises that education, including Higher Education is the key to the change in social attitudes that will be needed to protect the welfare of future generations. This involves helping learners to live as though the future matters and to achieve ecoliteracy. This includes the understanding that personal lifestyle decisions may have consequences, ranging from climate change, through loss of biodiversity, to pollution and resource depletion that may permit environmental degradation on a planetary scale. It also involves helping them to develop the skills needed to cope with such challenges. This international collection of research papers and position statements from special issues of the Journal of Geography in Higher Education and Applied Environmental Education and Communication, written by many of the leading practitioners in the field, aims to provide resources and practical guidance for all seeking to promote and engage in education for a sustainable future. Rabindranath Tagore encouraged each learner to make their actions demonstrate a harmonious union between education and environment. David Orr argued that the world needs people who live well in their places to make the world both habitable and humane and that the main challenge for education is to help learners make their minds fit for life on Earth. This book tries to chart a practical route towards these objectives.
