Eurasia Ict 2002 Information And Communication Technology

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First EurAsian Conference on Information and Communication Technology, EurAsia-ICT 2002, held in Shiraz, Iran, in October 2002. The 116 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from more than 300 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on artificial intelligence, data mining, multimedia, security, neural networks, data and knowledge engineering, XML, mobile communication, computer graphics, digital libraries, natural language processing, Internet and QoS, information society, e-learning, mobile Web information systems, wireless communications, Web-based applications, intelligent agents, real-time sytems, software engineering, algorithms, and theoretical computer science.

We welcomed participants to the 1st EurAsian Conference on Advances in Information and Communication Technology (EurAsia ICT 2002) held in Iran. The aim of the conference was to serve as a forum to bring together researchers from academia and commercial developers from industry to discuss the current state of the art in ICT, mainly in Europe and Asia. Inspirations and new ideas were expected to emerge from intensive discussions during formal sessions and social events. Keynote addresses, research presentation, and discussion during the conference helped to further develop the exchange of ideas among the researchers, developers, and practitioners who attended. The conference attracted more than 300 submissions and each paper was reviewed by at least three program committee members. The program committee selected 119 papers from authors of 30 different countries for presentation and publication, a task which was not easy due to the high quality of the submitted papers. Eleven workshops were organized in parallel with the EurAsia ICT conference. The proceedings of these workshops, with more than 100 papers, were published by the Austrian Computer Society. We would like to express our thanks to our colleagues who helped with putting together the technical program: the program committee members and external reviewers for their timely and rigorous reviews of the papers, and the organizing committee for their help in administrative work and support. We owe special thanks to Thomas Schierer for always being available when his helping hand was needed.

The scientific literature in chemistry and physics abounds with abbreviations of chemical compounds, physical methods and mathematical procedures. Unfortunately, many authors take it for granted that the reader knows the meaning of an abbreviation, something quite trivial for a specialist. For the less informed reader, these abbreviations thus present definite communication problems. The Gmelin Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Max Planck Society has collected more than 4000 abbreviations for methods and terms from chemistry, physics and mathematics and more than 4000 chemical compounds (mostly ligands in coordination chemistry and standard reagents for physical and analytical methods). GABCOM and GABMET provide an overview enabling readers and authors to check the definition of an abbreviation used by an author and to see whether this abbreviation is already being used for other purposes. GABCOM and GABMET are also in preparation in electronic form (data file and search software) for IBM-PC or compatible computers.

This book presents a coherent and well-balanced collection of revised papers focusing on agent-mediated knowledge management. Most of the papers are extended and improved versions of work presented at the Symposium on Agent-Mediated Knowledge Management, AMKM 2003, held during the AAAI Spring Symposium in Stanford, CA, USA in March 2003; also included are 3 special articles, including a detailed introduction to the topic by the volume editors. The 28 papers are organized in topical sections on collaboration and peer-to-peer support - agent-based community support - agent models for knowledge and organizations - context and personalization - ontologies and semantic Web - agents and knowledge engineering.

The concept of CAST as Computer Aided Systems Theory, was introduced by F. Pichler of Linz in the late 80’s to include those computer theoretical and practical developments as tools to solve problems in System Science. It was considered as the third component (the other two being CAD and CAM) that will provide for a complete picture of the path from Computer and Systems Sciences to practical developments in Science and Engineering. The University of Linz organized the ?rst CAST workshop in April 1988, which demonstrated the acceptance of the concepts by the scienti?c and technical community. Next, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria joined the University of Linz to organize the ?rst international meeting on CAST, (Las Palmas February 1989), under the name EUROCAST’89, that was a very successful gathering of systems theorists, computer scientists and engineers from most of European countries, North America and Japan. ItwasagreedthatEUROCASTinternationalconferenceswouldbeorganized every two years. Thus, the following EUROCAST meetings took place in Krems (1991), Las Palmas (1993), Innsbruck (1995), Las Palmas (1997), Vienna (1999) and Las Palmas(2001), in addition to an extra-European CAST Conference in Ottawain1994.SelectedpapersfromthosemeetingswerepublishedbySpringer- Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science nos. 410, 585, 763, 1030, 1333, 1728 and 2178 and in several special issues of Cybernetics and Systems: an lnternat- nal Journal. EUROCAST and CAST meetings are de?nitely consolidated, as it is demonstrated by the number and quality of the contributions over the years.

Industries and particularly the manufacturing sector have been facing difficult challenges in a context of socio-economic turbulence characterized by complexity as well as the speed of change in causal interconnections in the socio-economic environment. In order to respond to these challenges companies are forced to seek new technological and organizational solutions. In this context two main characteristics emerge as key properties of a modern automation system – agility and distribution. Agility because systems need not only to be flexible in order to adjust to a number of a-priori defined scenarios, but rather must cope with unpredictability. Distribution in the sense that automation and business processes are becoming distributed and supported by collaborative networks. Emerging Solutions for Future Manufacturing Systems includes the papers selected for the BASYS’04 conference, which was held in Vienna, Austria in September 2004 and sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).
