Everyday Knowledge Education And Sustainable Futures

Everyday knowledge offers opportunities for better understanding of significant issues of our times. Reflecting these themes this book places emphasis on community wisdom. The underpinning argument is that our instinctive urge for survival may not be enough if we do not share our collective knowledge and learn more about the everyday habits, beliefs and actions of communities spread across the region. Contributions from researchers active within local communities help build knowledge capacity and support for collaborative research.

This book illustrates how sustainability, information technologies, and envisioning the future can be effectively woven into an integrated educational experience. Bringing together the perspectives of researchers, policy makers, activists, educators and practitioners, this book critically interrogates the Western-centric assumptions underpinning education and development agendas and the colonial legacies of violence they often uphold. The book considers the crucial connection between the idea of sustainable futures and the demand to decolonize education. Containing an innovative mixture of text, stories and poetry, it explores how decolonized futures can be conceived and enacted, offering theoretical and practical examples, including from practice in educational and cultural organizations. In doing so, the book highlights education's potential role in facilitating processes of reparative justice that can contribute to decolonized futures.

The central role of education in responding to climate change is noted by stakeholders of all kinds. In Soft Science Sustainability, Ragnhild Utheim uses social cartography to explore the metacognitive, psychosocial, intercultural, collaborative, and interactive systems dimensions of what it means to sustain our common future together.
