Adam Blatner, MD The author presents the Therapeutic Spiral Model (TSM), a systematic modification of Psychodrama, for therapists working with people who are suffering from severe trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. A step-by-step guide for using experiential methods safely, the author first explains the theoretical foundations of TSM, research and theories on trauma, and experiential psychotherapy as a basis for understanding its development. Throughout, clinical action structures and advanced intervention modules for using experiential methods are presented. Each chapter contains active vignettes and case examples to demonstrate the process and progress of the spiral technique.

Holographic Reprocessing (HR) is a cognitive-experiential psychotherapy based on Seymour Epstein's theory of personality, cognitive experiential self-theory (CEST). According to CEST, people have a natural adaptive system for processing information. If an emotionally distressing event is not fully processed, people may attempt to resolve the stuck point, known as emotional blockage, by unconsciously setting up situations that recreate the original experience. A reenactment can facilitate a healthy confrontation of the issue, but it is not uncommon that this reenactment serves to reinforce negative perceptions and behavioral reactions. HR gives clients an opportunity to gain a new awareness and understanding of their re-enactments, thereby facilitating a constructive reorganization of their perceptual, emotional and behavioral tendencies. The hologram is used as a model for describing a pattern of these re-enactments - as each experience is a whole experience unto itself as well as being a part of a larger whole, and each experience contains information consistent with the larger pattern. The experience is holographic, and is termed an experiential hologram. These experiential holograms are holistic, integrative, and unique in terms of existing constructs such as a schema, belief, expectation, self-fulfilling prophecy, sensitivity, or script - constructs that are largely cognitive and only part of the holographic picture. The hologram also activates an experiential reaction including affect, sensations, and associations. The model of the experiential hologram is intended to more closely explain human experience, as it is assumed that experience itself is processed in a complex array of cognitions, affective reactions, sensations and associations. Written by a clinical psychologist specializing in the trauma therapy, this volume will guide mental health professionals through the use of holographic reprocessing in their treatment of trauma victims, from sufferers of PTSD to rape victims.

Therapeutic Spiral Model (TSM) psychodrama is an innovative three stage system of clinically modified psychodrama to treat trauma safely and effectively. This book presents the theoretical evolution of the Therapeutic Spiral Model from a Western model of early trauma-informed therapy to the worldwide system of experiential change that it is today. This book demonstrates the anchor of classical psychodrama theory and methods modified by clinical observations and awareness of current theories about trauma and how it effects the brain, See the evolution from 1992 to its present structures. It provides an accessible practice manual of using TSM psychodrama to promote trauma recovery in many cultures, countries, languages and settings. It presents a unique clinical map for intra-psychic experiential trauma therapy connecting classical psychodrama to TSM psychodrama. It demonstrates psychological concepts like projective identification and information from neurobiology for trauma repair in individual and group settings with action methods. The book shows easy-to-understand visual images such as trauma bubbles, therapeutic spirals and the autonomous healing center to help communicate internal states of spontaneity. The authors draw on their own rich experiences teaching TSM psychodrama in the global community and share stories of people’s recovery around the world. The audience for this publication includes trainers, practitioners, psychotherapists, trauma workers, and researchers working in a broad array of disciplines and human services.

New Directions in the Treatment of PTSD Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) offers a promising, empirically validated approach to the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma related problems. In this volume, you'll find a complete theoretical and practical guide to making this revolutionary new model work in your practice. After a quick overview of PTSD, the first part of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Trauma-Related Problems explains the problem of experiential avoidance as it relates to trauma and explores the verbal nature of post-traumatic stress. You'll learn the importance of mindfulness and acceptance in the ACT model, find out how to structure sessions with your clients, and examine the problem of control. The section concludes by introducing you to the idea of creative hopelessness as the starting point for creating a new, workable life after trauma. The book's second section offers a practical, step-by-step clinical guide to the six core ACT components in chronological order: •Creative hopelessness •The problem of control •Willingness and defusion •Self-as-context •Valued living •Committed action Each chapter explains how to introduce these topics to clients suffering from PTSD, illustrates each with case examples, and offers homework for your clients to use between sessions.
