Maintes fois posée en sciences humaines et sociales, la question de l'explication est traitée dans cet ouvrage à partir du champ disciplinaire des sciences de l'éducation. Elle est envisagée selon trois points de vue complémentaires. Celui de l'épistémologie, puisqu'à l'instar des autres sciences, les sciences de l'éducation n'échappent pas à la question de la dialectique entre expliquer et comprendre. Celui des démarches méthodologiques par lesquelles les sciences de l'éducation constituent leur objet d'étude, mobilisent leurs modèles théoriques et cherchent à expliquer et/ou comprendre les données qu'elles traitent. Celui enfin des dispositifs et procédés méthodologiques locaux, considérés sous l'angle des processus de constitution de la recherche. À travers des contributions de chercheurs issus ou non du champ des sciences de l'éducation, l'ouvrage tente de répondre à la question centrale de ses enjeux scientifiques, en interrogeant chacune des formes que peut prendre l'explication. Les sciences de l'éducation, dans leur diversité, font ainsi apparaître des critères scientifiques communs par lesquels elles produisent de la recherche, notamment à travers le concept d'explication causale pris au sens large. L'ouvrage s'adresse tout particulièrement aux professeurs et chercheurs en sciences de l'éducation, aux pédagogues ainsi qu'aux formateurs de formateurs.

The collection of chapters in this book results from ongoing scientific discussions on teaching, learning and curriculum studies in Europe. Didactics as a research field and area of knowledge deals with questions about teaching, learning and educational content. Didactics explores institutionalized teaching and learning processes that are fundamental to allow people living together and acting as citizens. There is great diversity in teacher education systems and approaches to learning and teaching practice across Europe, even though the practical everyday problems of the various national education systems may be very similar. Against this background, in the field of research on didactics, learning and teaching it is important to overcome fragmentation and to find common ground. In this book the editors demonstrate how far we have come over recent years in advancing research in the field which has the ultimate aim of improving learning and teaching. The editors recognise the diverging national and local practices as a starting point in searching for common ground and in creating shared understandings. The book is organised in six parts with 26 chapters in which the authors examine whether there is a paradigmatic shift from teaching to learning, take a closer look at various teacher education models and their empirical basis, discuss the importance of subject didactics, curriculum work and lesson planning, and analyse the impact of Information and Communication Technologies on didactical design. Finally, they relate the empirical findings to theory construction and offer proposals to further advance this vital field by increasing levels of international co-operation.

New research in mathematics education deals with the complexity of the mathematics’ classroom. The classroom teaching situation constitutes a pertinent unit of analysis for research into the ternary didactic relationship which binds teachers, students and mathematical knowledge. The classroom is considered as a complex didactic system, which offers the researcher an opportunity to gauge the boundaries of the freedom that is left with regard to choices about the knowledge to be taught and the ways of organizing the students’ learning, while giveing rise to the study of interrelations between three main elements of the teaching process the: mathematical content to be taught and learned, management of the various time dimensions, and activity of the teacher who prepares and manages the class, to the benefit of the students' knowledge and the teachers' own experience. This volume, reprinted from Educational Studies in Mathematics, Volume 59, focuses on classroom situations as a unit of analysis, the work of the teacher, and is strongly anchored in original theoretical frameworks. The contributions are formulated from the perspective of one or more theoretical frameworks but they are tackled by means of empirical investigations.

Cet ouvrage collectif est le prolongement d'un symposium qui se donnait pour objectifs, d'une part, d'explorer la diversité des recherches en sciences de l'éducation en France et, d'autre part, d'interroger cette diversité au sein d'une même discipline : comment s'articulent concrètement ce pluriel (des recherches) et ce singulier (une discipline) ? La première partie illustre la diversité des recherches en sciences de l'éducation mais chacune des contributions prend soin de prolonger sa présentation par une réflexion sur son positionnement par rapport à la discipline. La deuxième partie se centre spécifiquement sur la discipline : son histoire, ses perspectives, ses droits, ses devoirs et ses enjeux, tant sociaux qu'épistémologiques. La troisième partie analyse les controverses du symposium, reprend les principales questions et inscrit cette production dans des perspectives plus larges. En résumé, cet ouvrage a l'avantage de fournir une photographie très actuelle de la recherche en sciences de l'éducation en France. Cette photographie est bien évidemment circonscrite mais, de par la réflexion épistémologique qui l'accompagne, elle offre une contribution originale et concrète à la connaissance de la recherche en sciences de l'éducation. Cet ouvrage constitue un témoignage fort intéressant dans l'histoire de cette discipline.

This book aims to present some of the latest research in the didactics of space and geometry, deepen some theoretical questions and open up new reflections for discourse. Its focus is as much on the approach of geometry itself and its link with the structuring of space as it is on the practices within the classroom, the dissemination of resources, the use of different artefacts and the training of teachers in this field. We study how spatial knowledge, graphical knowledge and geometric knowledge are taken into account and articulated in the teaching of space and geometry in compulsory schools, teaching resources (programs and textbooks) and current teacher training. We question how the semiotic dimension (language, gestures and signs) of geometric activity can be taken into account, and we identify the role of artefacts (digital or tangible) in the teaching and learning of geometry. This book brings together some fifteen contributions from Frenchspeaking researchers from different countries (France, Switzerland and Canada).
