Take, as an illustration, the History of Cyrus the Great and his Campaigns. Herodotus tells us there were at least three different versions of it in his day. Our author has gone back to the dawn of authentic history, and has selected forty-five characteristic battles, covering a period of twenty-five hundred years. These have been carefully studied and faithfully described, and, though in many instances widely separated in point of time, the course of history linking them together has been traced with what distinctness was practicable consistently with the necessity of keeping the book within reasonable limits.
